Hi,

I'm new to coins and new to the forum! Please go easy :P
I have a few coins, that I was told looked polished, making them almost worthless. I was just wondering what you did with these coins? Stick them in a draw somewhere and forget about them?

Here is one of the coins:

Make "pocket pieces" out of them.

Welcome GregH!

A number of the members have suggested making a pocket piece out of a cleaned or polished coin.
It simply means keeping it in your pants' pocket all of the time. Eventually, the friction of the coin against the material
causes enough wear to make the coin look better.
This will reduce the technical grade but often approves the coins appearance.

Hate to Wait, [Anyone?],
Can you find an example of a before and after pocket piece to give Greg a good idea of what we mean?

How long would it take, to make any change on a pocket piece?

Wouldn't it take years to "circulate" unless you are constantly fiddling with it? Maybe even then.

Unless the coin would gain a significant monetary or collective value I guess a 1897 GB penny wouldn't be worth making it a pocket piece? I have about 6 that I got and all were polished. Which is a big shame and made me second guess getting anything coin wise from ebay. I'm currently waiting for a book to be delivered to help me understand more on grading GB coins etc.

This subject has come up several times in the past. Try using the Search tab at the top for cleaned coins, polished coins, other similar possibilities.
What-To-Do-With-Coins-That-Were-Polished-Etc?
As an example here are some of the polished and cleaned coins I'm working on. The main problem with cleaned and polished coins is which are they really and with what. By that I mean were they just cleaned with one or more of the many, many products people use? Or where they in reality POLISHED? I've seen people at flea markets use coins as an example of how their auto polish works. And some such polishes are in fact cleaner waxes which not only cleans your coins but leaves a layer of wax on them. I really like those and spend a bit of time experimenting to see just how close to normal I can make them. Putting them in a pocket is sort of a vague statement since so many things vary. The type of material of the pocket. What else is in that pocket? How much walking or running do you do? Where you work too may make them worse due to the invironment.
So far the ones I've been messing with have been recleaned with numerous products to remove any polish or wax then left on a kitchen window for a long time.

On silver or gold coins, unless they are pretty tough dates, your looking at melt value only if polished.

Stick on the window sill in a paper envelope or leave out in the open air and wait for nature to take it's course.

Give it away to a young future numismatist. There's no greater service to the hobby than that.

I agree with the pocket piece idea. I would also add (since I dont know GB money) if the coin is a rare or hard to find sought after coin they an still carry substantial premiums even if cleaned or polished. They wont be worth as much as undamaged ones but a rare coin is a rare coin
