So, I took y'all's advice and made myself a balance out of an old mechanical pencil and one of those salon-style emery boards (I'm a bit short on popcicle sticks, what with the whole "trying to diet" thing). I found the rough place where two wheat pennies more-or-less balanced (I couldn't find a pencil with flat sides, so there was a bit of back and forth, but, y'know, neither side plunking flat down on the table), then carefully removed one wheat and put the 1983 down in its place.
. . . . *sigh* fond hope, so quickly dash'd. Ker-plunk down on the nightstand went the wheat, up in the air went the 1983.
So, not a copper. But . . . why did it ring? Were there experimental pennies that year or something? Because seriously, NOT A NORMAL ZINC SOUND.

Bummer - if anyone were to find one in circulation, I thought it would be you or monika. I will keep . (No idea of why you get the weird ringtone on that one)

Sick to my stomach right now, I have been using a copper sorter and I have had some 83's kicked out and didn't know these errors were around, I have "returned them to the wild" as I have seen some people post, the machine has never caught them, that I know of on the first pass, it always kicks them out when I am looking at zinc coins and it detects that it is not zinc. I am with GoldenChest I need to find a complete list of what I need to be looking for, otherwise I am just wasting my time......

So I just ran aprox 20k pennies and it kicked out a 1930 I missed :(, a 4-1983D's, 3-1983's, one of the 83's rings more than the others but not as much as a 81, guess I need a scale now....

I never look for anything like that when I search pennies but should. I guess I just don't have the patience. I don't even have the patience to search for 1970s small date even though I found one so far. I just flip them all on tails and look for wheats.

Use the just carl method so you do not need a scale: Quote: Take a pencil and balance a popscile stick on it. Place a drop of glue at the balance point. Place a pre 1982 cent at the far end on one side. Place your 1983 Cent at the other far end. If yours is all Copper the two will balance. If yours is only plated, the all Copper one will make that side drop.

The government has hidden micro phones inside some of our coins. This is done to spy on us all. That ring your heard was the FBI calling you to see why your holding one of their phones so long. Of course you already checked for that 83 Doubled Die reverse. And that famous Double Ear on the 84. etc.
