Is this a Cud coin? Stumbled across it while sorting coppers.

That one is fairly small so it would be worth a few dollars, value increases with the size of the Cud. Still, an error is an error so it is a nice find

Yes this is a Cud. Nice find.

If you examine the reverse the area opposite the Cud will be weakly struck ... a clear photo of both sides of the coin always helps us to help you.

Cuds are cool. The bigger the better. Finding a Cud in sorted cooper is a nice bonus.

Are Cuds only on the rim or could it be in the middle of a coin?

" Cud" describes something that is only found on the rim of a coin, when a chunk of the die breaks away. They're called "die breaks" in the interior of a coin.

Cud
An area of a coin struck by a die that has a complete break across part of its surface. A Cud may be either a Retained Cud, where the faulty piece of the die is still in place, or a full Cud, where the piece of the die has fallen away. Retained Cuds usually have dentil detail if on the edge, while full Cuds do not.
A Cud will always include the rim. If it's only on the rim it is called a rim Cud and if it goes into the field of the coin then it's just called a Cud.

So long as its marketed properly, base of bust Cuds like yours should sell for at least $10.
