Just won these two Proof? Franklin half dollars on ebay. After receiving them they do have proof like surfaces, but they seem very poorly struck. There isn't much detail in Ben's hair, although there are full bell lines on the reverse, but very light. Opinions please.

Hi Okie-colin,
I would believe these are proofs. I've seen quite a few proof Franklins that really don't seem sharply detailed. I have a 1956 PCGS PR65 DCAM Franklin that I bought at a show. The seller had a dozen or more in 65 and 66 DCAM slabs and this was the one I liked the best. Ben's head is a smooth dome with hardly any visible hair detail. The "Pass and Stow" lettering on the Liberty Bell is somewhat blurry and, as on your coins, the bell lines are full but shallow. Perhaps the strikes were better on earlier dates. Do we have any Franklin proof fans who would like to comment?

Yours are proof, and I generally wouldn't say that Franklin Proofs are poorly struck, but the reverse detail appears misty on the four I own (1960-1-2-3) and on a lot of the ones I've seen. (My local coin dealer has several earlier proofs in stock, and they all seem about the same, although I remember his 1954 as being quite stunning. There's a 1954 for sale on ebay right now [item 250102777808] that's a pretty nice [read: expensive] example of cameo and relatively stark details.) I'm guessing this has something to do with the way the dies are prepared for minting proofs. In the Franklins the details often seem to suffer for the sake of the reflective surfaces. I'm not an expert, so you're still seeking a definitive reason...

Well mine certainly aren't in the same league as that 1954 Cameo. What a beautiful coin. Nevertheless, I got mine for about ten dollars each and that seems like a decent price. Thanks for the reassurance. I have another proof coming that looks better than these two.

They are very nice. Can you get closer pics? Hard for me to grade by the pics but I go right nowR 64 on the 60, and PR 65 on the 58. But hard to tell if those spots are on the coin. Nevertheless, nice coins.
