What Causes A Buffalo Nickel To Take On This Type Of Look?

Kefiroth Pillar of the Community United States 1431 Posts	Posted 01/04/2013 10:21 pm It is indeed from applying acid to the coin. This is often done on worn dateless Buffalo nickels. Some people just put acid on the date to reveal it, and some prefer to apply acid to the whole coin for a more uniform look. Be aware that as such coins are considered altered/cleaned, they are with few exceptions almost always worth less than those with original surfaces and a readable date. I was selling a group of semi-keys locally and one stood out to me in particular. It's not as defined as the one in the link is, but the surfaces look nowhere near natural. I hung onto it, I didn't feel comfortable selling it if there was any chance of something being wrong with the coin.
