Well I had been looking around for one of these for some time. I worked out a deal with the seller on vcoins that sold me the Ardashir I tetradrachm. I got a good price for the best example of this type of coin I could find. The coin is large and in really nice shape. The crude reverse is more distinguished them most, and I welcome this coin into my collection. Today I share the sellers photo of the coin, but will soon post my own when it arrives. I welcome any comments. Kingdom of Elam King KAMNASKIRES VI Late 1st cent BC to early 1st century AD Billon Tetradrachm 16.10g x 29mm obv: diademed bust of king right rev: male bust left with garbled legend ref: Seaby 5889

Nice coin. Now I have to go read about Kingdom of Elam and see where that is.

Elam or Elymais, they where a quasi-imdependent kingdom in Parthian Persia. They were destroyed by the Sassanian dynasty, starting with the Pathian defeat by Ardashir I. Sassanid rule was later cemented by Shapur I son of Ardashir and co-regent. Elam is a canidate for the home of one of the 3 wisemen, who came from the east to visit Jesus, because they observed some type of celestial event.

Generally rarer then the drachms. The tets are often really really almost blank reverses. This one with legend and the reverse king, if really rare in this condition. You can easily go on and find ones in lesser condition from $150 - $350....I paid $125 including registered shipping from the UK. I would value mine in the $250-$350 range. DougS bought one in 1994 for like $35 dollars but that was twenty(ish) years ago.

Great pick up. As I get more into these I might be willing to spend that kind of money. Sounds like you got a smoking deal.

You know I would love to in the end make a type set, one tetradrachm from each empire of antiquity, but I keep coming up with these "far flung exotic kingdoms full of coins" I think this might be a task I cannot complete.
