There's a bit of a difference in quality between the obverse and reverse

My granddad's coin collection. Most of his coins were pulled from circulation (cash register at his store, ~1930-late 1960's) but he must've traded for this one since Half Dimes were long out of circulation by then.

It looks like a very good candidate for a skilled engraver to work his magic and turn this well worn coin into a token of love (and increase its value as well).

A lot of Capped Bust coinage, especially dimes and Half Dimes seem to be prone to split grades with the obverse being higher than the reverse. Not sure why this occured so often ..... perhaps it was due to cabinet friction in old time collections?

Anyway nice coin with honest wear that in my opinion gives it a lot of character.

Horseback accidents. When the rider fell off at a high speed sliding across the trail only the one side felt the brunt of it

That's an understatement.

A great canvass for a starting point.

A little detail with a lot of character.

I like it as it is. Despite the heavy wear there are no big scratches or dings, just even wear. The reverse looks like a full moon. Might keep this one for myself.

Back then pants pockets where not common/non-existent and if it was the coin would have been lost on its first rodeo.

Looks like I was wrong about this being the oldest coin in our collection. I took another look at a small pile of large cents and there are several older than this, back to 1816. Unfortunately the ~25 or so large cents are mostly in very worn condition (fair to good) and most with damage of one kind or another. I really like them though!
