Hello friends, an old man (trader) wants to sell me 5 cents dated 1873 Large date over Small date (3 over 3), the quality is probably minimum AU50. Today I saw the coin, but he wants too high price by claiming that this is probably the best coin in Europe this variety. What do you think - what maximum price I can pay him if the coin is in approx. quality au50-au55, and looks problem free coin?

This coin is a serious rarity. There may be a dozen or so known, and as near as I can tell only one exists in Mint State. It's no doubt the finest one in Europe. First, go here: http://www.shieldnickels.net/top20/73F106.htmlThat's an image of what the overdate should look like. Note, the one you mention should be even sharper as the imaged coin is rather worn. To give you an idea of the rarity, an AU58 example sold for $13,800 at Heritage in 2011: http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...0&lotNo=3353I would not know how to suggest a price. Do not consider this coin unless you're completely comfortable with evaluating Shield nickels; the difference between original surfaces and a Details grade could be thousands of dollars.

Wow! SsuperDdave, thank you so much for the information! It gives me great pleasure that I can use this forum! Actually, the truth is that the dealer does not know about this variety 3 over 3, but the price was a little higher than normal for 5 cents 1873 in AU condition and was hesitant because I saw date under a magnifying glass. I'm sure 99.999% that the coin is authentic, since this dealer and his son like me buy coins from the U.S. ebay and other sites. Today I bought this coin. But if it is really so rare, I'm not sure if the coin is really 3 over 3, or is it just some common double error? Please look at these photos, and confirm - if there is any chance this is a rare coin 3 over 3, will try tonight to make better pictures with my Praktica. Thank you!

Oh, my God ... I can not believe how lucky I got in the first days of the new year, but my date really looks the same! And my coin has the same line die crack as coin from Heritage:

Yeah for you! But I wonder why the dealer knew what he had and didn't sell at a higher price Anyway, yeah for you!

Yay for you and Happy New Year!
And wow, I think your coin doesn't just look like the Heritage coin, I think it is the SAME coin. Where did you find that picture, in their CoinFacts or archives?
[edit: I misread, though you said you saw it on PCGS but you said Heritage. Anyway, looks like the exact same coin. SCORE!]

On Heritage's site, the status of that coin is that it sold for $13,800 on 10/13/11 with the note "This item's Owner is proactively entertaining Offers". Hmmm.
I tried enlarging the photos of that auctioned coin but didn't come up with clear pictures like you did, bobo13. Is this the coin in your comparison pictures? I searched Heritage but didn't find another.

I didn't mean to imply anything amiss; didn't realize all 4 images were from the same coin.
You, sir, are a winner if you paid less than $US10,000 for that coin. I urge you to explore your options regarding having the coin authenticated and graded by PCGS Europe.

that nickel has been hiding in plain sight for 140 years...i mean think about that...it was saved early because it was an American coin that made its way to Europe and wound up in some admirers pocket...now all these years later, here she is...unreal story too, a coin dealer that didn't know the variety they had...based on the story I say you paid 250euro....that's a lotto win there man...but do not sell it unless you need the money, I mean hold that puppy for a while, that's a true rarity поздравления

Dsfreeworld, I think this coin really had interesting story. But, why do you think it is not wise to sell now, is there any reduced demand and lower prices at the moment of rare U.S. coins?
