I hope this is in the correct thread. If not could the moderator please move it, thx.

Tell me what you think about this Sasanian issue. I purchased it from www.mintproducts.com It's about thbe size of a half dollar and thin, 4.5grams.

Here is a great article about a rash of counterfeit examples. http://coinauthentication.co.uk/newsletter7.html I've got to be honest, just because it was purchased from MintProducts.com doesn't make me worry any less. I'd like to hear you opinions.

Thanks
Ben

It looks fine enough to me. I think these thin, late silver drachms are too tricky to cast. The gold and copper ones are easier.

Here's an excellent reference site for Sassanian coins, and for deciphering the Pahlavi script used on these coins.

I'm no expert in the series, but just from looking at that site, I'd call your coin as Khusru II, year 33 (622-623 AD), DA mintmark (Darabgird mint), variety with APD ("praise") in the obverse margin.

Yes, I agree with Sap. Generally a cast would have a much softer appearance. This one looks ok from the picture. However I am not so sure about some of the other ancients I saw on the site, it is difficult to tell much from the small-sized scans they provide.

These Sassanian coins are historically interesting and nice examples can sometimes be obtained for very modest prices. I have two in my collection and I'm always on the lookout for them.
