After browsing ancient coin listings I keep seeing Roman city commemoratives. I love some of the designs of these but not sure if they were considered coins or medals at the time. Where would these fit as part of an ancient collection?

They would be considered coins, and would fit nicely in your collection. The medals come later to the Renaissance when they struck "Paduans"; huge metals with the likeness of the Caesars.

I have both Roma and Constantinopolis. The Roma coin needs an upgrade which I'm planning on doing later on sometime. Constantinopolis Commemorative AE3/4. 334-335 AD. CONSTANTINOPOLIS, laureate, helmeted & mantled bust left holding sceptre / Victory standing left on foot of prow with sceptre and leaning on shield, •BSIS• in ex. RIC VII Siscia 241 RIC VIII Trier 66

By all means, grab a couple of them. I did when I first started collecting ancients. They go together nicely as a pair in a collection.

They were struck as circulating coinage.

Take your time in finding these types. The prices can vary a lot. I made a few mistakes when starting to collect them and paid more (much more) than necessary for some. example: I paid about $70.00 for this one. Although it's a nice coin, since then then I have seen many as nice or nicer examples go for around $30.00 I paid about $18.00 for this one There are some mints that are harder to find than others, (right now) and they will cost more. There are a couple I'd probably pay whatever the dealer was asking because I'm collecting these by mints and officiae and only need a few more of hard to find ones.(If they even exist). I don't collect Wolf and Twins, but the prices probably vary a lot also. I paid $30.00 for this one

Doucet, nice group of coins and thanks for the advice. Don't think I'll go for all mints but do want one of each type. And I have noticed the prices of these are all over the place.

Yes, the prices are all over. Alexandria is my favorite. The wings are too cool.

These are very popular with collectors though experienced collectors seem to drift away from them over time for some reason. I think they are an excellent way to get experience of mint styles as they were produced in so many. I also think its a useful challenge for beginners to have a side project collecting a mint set of some of the later common coins. Many possible 'sets' are out there, I collected (still do) SOLI INVICTO COMITI coins, never spending more than about $10 per coin in the process, it helped me understand styles and mintmarks etc and didn't break the bank. It can be a nice side project to have on the 'back-burner' for when your not sure what to buy next or funds are low. Your right that the prices are all over the place for these. Some sellers charge what they think they can get while others charge what the coins are worth. These can be bought very cheaply on ebay without much fear of fakes. Doucets Roma Commemorative is an absolute beauty, quality, style and patina are all excellent, I'd pay $30.00 for it in a heartbeat

Correction...I looked back and actually paid forty for the Urbs Roma.
My bad.
I'm getting old and my memory isn't what it should be anymore.
