Hello! I recently bought a small joblot of cents which last night I decided to check for errors. This was the only one that stood out. It looks like the metal has leaked out of 'STATES' and has joined the letters up. Is this an error? If so what caused it?

Its Post Mint Damage, Probably took a hit early on in its life there, and over time it wore down like the rest of the coin to a more smooth "Melted" look

Something was pressed into the coin, making those indentations and distorting the legends and rims. It wasn't on the die.
