I see in my 2011 Charlton, that the 1901 half dollar is valued at 4500 for AU-55.
Now, I'm just a newcomer to this hobby, but I'm wondering if that tarnish existed when the coin was graded, and if it would still grade so highly today.
Whatever any book says, I personally wouldn't be attracted to this coin, because of its appearance. (Even if I could afford something in this range.)
The seller has a good record, but if I was going to buy this item, I'd want to do it in person.
The pictures show each side of the coin, and the certificate. I'd like to see a pic of the coin in the holder.
The features do look to be quite sharp.

I agree with Jerry. I think it's ugly. Because of the toning, I can't see any wear, but I trust that ICCS could, and the grade (on a technical basis) is fair.
More importantly though, what are your thoughts Glenn?

I would agree with the above opinions as well. The obverse looks pretty good, features are well defined, however...the reverse has that awful toning. IMO its a very "ugly" coin. But beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.

The price exactly matches what it is listed for in the Coin news Trends, but the darkness of the tarnish is a turn off for me.

Personally I have mixed feelings about the coin. I purchased from this seller before and the coins I've received in hand are sooo much nicer than what the scans originally showed in the auctions. The only time I don't mind the dark toning on coins is when it's on the Vicky/Edy/KGV/VI, silver coinage. Also at this grade level for a coin with a mintage of a mere 80K, beggars are not always choosers! I've been looking to upgrade my 1901 EF-40 half dollar for the past 10 years and realized any grades above AU-55 go into the Stratosphere price range. Also the 2012 I.C.C.S. Population Report shows only 4 other AU-55's and who knows if either of the other 4 have problems or are re-submissions creating a ghost stat. I agree with the general consensus about the Reverse of this coin (not so pretty toning on Reverse but strong strike and sweet Obverse), however, with all other above mentioned factors at play, I will take this weekend to decide if I will make the purchase? Thanks for everyone taking the time/trouble for your opinions, they will be highly regarded as my end decision qualifier! Glenn

Glenzy, does the x starting out the certification number mean it is a recent certificate? If so there is a good chance it could've been re graded adding to the population of au55. I think it is a great coin. And if upgrading had been on your to do for this date for a decade make it happen. I am curious if your current 1901 has more even toning.

The three letter ID number does mean a recent certification. ICCS went from two letter codes to three letter codes around August 2011.
You have to remember that those pictures look like a flatbed scanner - which shows detail, but not lustre. If you look at 2 to 3 o'clock there are hints of blue toning. I think this piece will be much better in hand and I'll bet that toning and lustre isn't all that bad. Why not just ask the seller to send you additional photos?

SPP, that makes sense, I could not put my finger on the toning, but what you said certainly does make sense. Also Bmoney, Yes the 6 digit cert. # does mean it's a recent submission which could possibly mean that the I.C.C.S. Pop Report may not be accurate. Personally I put absolutely NO credibility on any T.P.G. Pop Report simply for the fact there are too many Collectors/Dealer's that crack out coins and re-submit...............including Me! Glenn

I personally think it is a great coin. Far from ugly IMO. The toning adds to the character of the coin and is a testament to it's originality. I'm sure it would look much nicer in hand. If it wasn't for the cheek abrasion on the obverse, the coin would have probably graded MS.
