Hi, this is a coin from my collection I have been very curious to try and understand how the coin got such ugly toning, what environmental factors would cause a silver coin to tone like this?

jdmern, to the CCF. Toning is caused by environmental conditions that affect the surface metal of the coin. Heat (temperature), humidity (moisture) and handling (coin sitting in the same place w/out being moved) are the three main factors.

That is a really nice coin.
If you are wondering why it is spotty I have no idea.

the brown and blue looks like it was stuck to something copper and the contamination leeched its way onto the silver, then harshly cleaned

Spots like that make me think it had repeated condensation at some point.

I don't know how true this but I heard that coins in a cedar box will make dark toning as well?

Cause of the toning I'm not too sure about.

The coin's grade looks to be high EF, low AU.

However, there's obvious evidence the coin has been harshly cleaned.

The coin is graded as AU details, cleaning, under the loop there are no hairlines, so is the color or spottiness that gives evidence of it being harshly cleaned?

you wont see hairlines (as in rubbed with a soft cloth or q-tip) through the gouges (especially on the rev). looks like someone took steel wool or a wire brush to the oxidization. it is beyond "cleaned"
