The Maui Trade dollar is a coin about the size of a traditional United States silver dollar; it may be used to make purchases at participating Maui businesses or kept as a memento. The coins are a highly sought after collector's item, often exchanged or traded in order to complete the sets dating from the 1992 issue. Morgan Fred Rest in Peace United States 2684 Posts	Posted 04/24/2007 10:15 pm I bought a couple Maui Dollars when I visited Maui in 1979 exactly like this if I remember correctly (if I still have one, it's buried deep in my collection). They were a tourist souvenir thing, a product of an active Chamber of Commerce and they could be redeemed at local shops if someone really wanted to spend them. The Wikipedia entry applies to Maui Trade dollars of which I am unfamiliar, but earlier Maui Dollars have been around for awhile. Since they're dated, I suspect there's a sub-field of Maui Dollar collectors. Fred Report this Post to the Staff
