SO, what do you guys think this guy is worth? Not my photos, but the sellers - I'm sorry for the poor quality and size. I have no additional info yet but I doubt ill be able to afford this (he's getting back to me later with a price and hopefully photos).

As I say, I probably wont be bale to afford it - I dont have much money, I'm just interested in the off chance of being able to get it at melt or something.

The gold Angel of England has been on my want list since I was a kid. But I am not a millionaire so I guess I will see it only in my dreams and at the occasional big show. I prefer the reverse with the double ended ship - especially from the reign of Elizabeth I.

If the coin is under $3000 I would be suspicious it was not real.

I would buy it at melt as would any collector an then hope it is not electroplated. The design looks good so at minimum you would be getting a cast. Make sue it is returnable if the density is low.

IMO it looks like a Henry VII Angel with a crowned portcullis mint mark, to me though something looks a bit odd I could be wrong however.
In that sort of condition and if the other side is just as good I would estimate that coin to be worth in the region of £1500-£2000 with a melt value of about £100. while on the subject of angels you can sometimes get some pretty good deals; I picked this half of James II angel for £37 and it has a melt of £50.

Interesting, never knew James II issued an Angel at all. I thought the Charles' were the last to use that denomination.

Technically you are correct however the 'Angel' carried on being minted up until Anne when it was eventually ended by George I. It was not actual currency and was more for ceremonial use however it was still worth its weight in gold. It was said that the monarchs touch could cure tuberculosis hence these 'coins' were issued as 'touch pieces' on a piece of white ribbon. My one in particular is a James II one issued around 1685-88.

Well that's a relief - I thought my mind was going.

Also I had noticed the update in the ship style. The vessel on the reverse appears to be a Galleon style of the type used to cross the Atlantic. The earlier design was the smaller double ender used in coastal waters and the med.
