About 15-20 years ago I set out to complete a full set of Franklin halves in mint state condition. I wasn't too concerned about FBL as much as the coin needed to have a very clean cheek and fields. So I assembled a full set (minus the 48-D) in MS-64 to MS-66. Several are FBL. With duplicates I have 44 coins.

My collecting wants/needs have changed and I now want to sell the set. Here's the problem. Many of these coins were cherry picked out of mint sets and dealer's inventory so only 17 are in slabs. I broke another 5-6 out of slabs when I went through a "I don't need a stinking slab" phase around at time. So it would be of considerable expense (I think) to slab the remaining coins. I thought I would keep this set long-term.

What do you think is the best way to sell this set? Wait until I can get to a major coin show? Send them to a national dealer? I have never sold on ebay so I don't know what that is like. Any advice?

Thanks in advance,
ChersterB

ps - this is not a veiled attempt to sell these on this forum. I am just seeking advice.

my best advice is post a couple hundred more times here and then keep it in the family.

check out tele-trade. they will slab at your request for a premium and then post it all on their auctions. you'll pay the commissions to them but I have a feeling you'll make a profit overall based on when you bought what you did.

you can contact heritage auctions as well.

ebay will cost you as much in fees with them and paypal as a major auction house would but you're doing all the work of pictures, setting up the auctions etc...

you're not going to get much for coins cracked out of slabs. so you can either sell it piecemail, sell the slabbed coins, and regrade the raw ones, or sell the raw ones for a fraction of what you think they are worth.

You'll get more money out of these breaking the set up and selling as individual coins. It will take more time doing it this way though.

I would grade the ones any of the higher end FBL ones, as for the other raw ones youll have to figure out if the cost of grading is more or less than what they would sell for raw. If you have to spend 30 bucks to get an extra 100 its a no brainer but if your spending 30 dollars for an extra 10 its not really worth it.

The other thing you could try is the ones that you know arent worth regrading get a dansco and sell it as a partial set.

There's a big price shift going from MS64 to MS65 and an even bigger one going to MS66.

So I would try to pick out the 65's and 66's and get them stabbed. You then have several good options for selling them including some of those mentioned above. I personally think ebay is ok, especially for slabbed coins where photos, etc. are less important. eBay/Paypal takes about 10% which is in line with other options such as Teletrade or Heritage.

The 64's I would just sell at the best price you can get for them. Most of them are only worth a few bucks over the melt price with the exception of a few early dates.

I don't think you will get full value if you try to sell them as a set. No one is likely to pay 65/66 prices unslabbed. Too much risk that they don't grade out.
