I have posted in the past couple days about selling my collection of Franklin halves that I collected approximately 15 years ago. I studied the coins and researched what I thought I could get for them at auction. I am interested in resubmitting several of them to PCGS to try to get a better grade. I handpicked these coins and the grading standards seemed tougher around that time. Most of these are in the older style holders. Here's what I got:

- 1949-S NGC MS-65. This coin's a beauty and I think it should qualify as at least MS-65 FBL.
- 1950-D ANACS MS-64. Another nice coin with nice toning. I think it should grade as MS-65 and maybe FBL.
- 1953 NGC MS-64. Again, I think it should be MS-65.
- 1961-D PCGS MS-64 FBL (blue holder). It's a nice coin that could get MS-65 FBL.
- 1962-D PCGS MS-64 (OGH). Again, this should grade at least MS-65.

So, my question is what's the best way to go about doing this? Do I send the coins in their current holders or is it best to crack them out and then send them in? Is PCGS swayed by the grades on the holders and reluctant to assign higher grades? I've never sent coins in to a TPG so I need some advice.

Thanks in advance!

For the NGC ones you can send them in as a cross over and they will only change the slab if it gets the same grade or better if you select that option. For the PCGS ones they have some new regrade thing that I think is cheaper where theyll look at it in the slab and only crack it if it does better. Not sure if they do cross overs for ANACS or not but I want to say I think they do.

I would say dont bother with the 53 and 62D though, the gain in value is rather small especially for the 53. Its possible you could get what you want with one and pay for the whole lot and then some, but theyre usually tight around those big value jumps like your looking at. Id probably try and get a few more eyes on them and see which ones they think are worth the chance, if you think something is maybe an FBL it most likely wont get it.

Use their photograde section on the website too to compare them with and get a better idea of what chance they have.

Maybe you might want to contact PCGS and ask them or you could go to a coin dealer and ask him but only if you have had dealings with him and feel confident in his advice.

From the PCGS Website

Quote:
RECONSIDERATION: Use the Reconsideration service if you would like to have your PCGS-graded coin regraded without being removed from its current holder. If your coin's grade is determined to improve by one numeric point or more, it will be cracked out of its current holder, given the new grade, and placed in a new holder.

Quote:
CROSSOVER: For a coin previously graded (currently encapsulated) by another grading service, PCGS will holder the coin only if it meets or exceeds your specific request notated in the Minimum Grade column on the front of the form. Please specify one of the following options in the minimum grade column on the front of the form. If you leave this area blank, PCGS will assume the minimum grade is the grade currently on the holder.

CURRENT â€" Requests coin to cross at grade listed on holder (no higher than 69)
ANY â€" Requests coin to cross at any numerical grade (01-69)
DETAILS â€" Request Genuine with Details
If you would like to specify a lower grade than listed on the holder, write your acceptable numerical grade (include suffix if applicable).

Note the following limitations apply:

You cannot specify a higher minimum grade.
MS/PR70 coins must have a minimum grade of 69 or lower.
You cannot specify a minimum details grade for genuine coins.
First Strike or equivalent will not be recognized.

why waste the money? These aren't that high value.....there are plenty that buy the coin not the holder so if these are nice coins, people will spend the money.

You may want to check this site for reference regarding FBL. They have high resolution & explanation, which are better than PCGS photo grade site.
