Looking through the inexpensive type coin bins at my LCS, I came across this. Knew immediately it was a fake, and I brought it to the woman that runs the shop. She told me to just keep it. UGLY coin, to say the least!

Is that a cast copy? I've dug coins that ended up looking like that.

This coin is a cast lead copy.

As common as lead is most people do not realize that it is very hazardous to your health. One should, if possible, handle lead items with gloves on or wash your hands thoroughly after and especially before eating to prevent any ingestion of lead particles. Lead can build up in a person's system much faster than it can be removed.

Other than it's appearance, the fact that it could be bent was a dead giveaway to it being counterfeit.

Why on earth would someone pick that date to counterfeit?

Thanks for sharing!

It probably wasn't a numismatic counterfeit. Either someone just playing around, or it could be a contemporary counterfeit in which case they didn't care what date they used.

A more common date would less suspicious than a rare(r) date...IMO.

Nice. :-) I'd love to have something like this in The Black Cabinet's stacks. :-)
