Something I've noticed while looking through wheat cents is that many seem to have a deliberate red coloring applied, and some I've found have a black color. I searched the forum and haven't found anything. Does anyone know the story? They seem to be too frequent and from unrelated sources to be some school art project from the 70's.

I don't know the answer, but do know exactly what you are talking about. Watching closely.

Googled it and all it really came up with was someones opinion that they "may" have been spray painted for use in a vending machine.(?) I don't know what the reasoning for this would be. But it is intentional, not a patina or road grime like others mentioned. I've found so many that I'm thinking of making a collection. One black 1920-S I just received is in exceptional condition. Most black ones I've found, the black has mostly wore off and is only in the lower or recessed areas. Red ones are the most common.

I haven't photographed any of my coins yet (been holding out for one of those coin specific camera things), but if I can get anything to turn out right, I'll post.

I had found these red pennies when I was a kid and I have found handfuls of them in the 5K hoard I have been going through. I will try and post some pictures of them tonight. Personally, I think the red ones are a form of oxidation like the so called 'Woody's.' They do not appear to be colored or plated. But then again, the high points are always worn when I find them. Interesting.

Obviously, a true red is an MS grade. This red is more of an oxidation red. Here are some Red Abe's. First two PICS have a side by side comparison with a somewhat normal color LWC.
