Anyone else upset with the 2013 USM ATB SPS? I never thought that they would feature a "Nose" to commemorate Mt. Rushmore. Sorry Mods, we definitely let our fellow collectors down on that one?

carmykle: I wasn't fond of the design either, until I realized the monument has been shown in its entirety on the South Dakota qtr from 2007, and the commemorative half dollar and silver dollar from 1991. So what could they do to avoid a tedious repetition of the same iconic monument. I feel that TR, although carved later should've been included as the "father" of the NPS, of which this series is supposed to celebrate. The design has certainly grown on me in the last few weeks, as both the Washington and Jefferson heads mimic the placement of the original quarter as designed by Flanagan in 1932, and the terrific one year only 2005 Westward Journey obverse. So I think it's near that the mint designers looked to the past for inspiration. I can't wait to see how the puck translates the design near the end of the year.

I wasn't fond of the whole Rushmore idea again at all. It was like well there isn't anything else in the state so let's repeat what we've done in the past. The workman on the face below the nose made me really look at the coin again because I really thought that it was something else hanging there.

What about celebrating the conception and working on the Crazy Horse Monument. There is also the Badlands National Wilderness National Park. There are other scenic places worth seeing in South Dakota other than Rushmore.

The other alternative would be to coin the reverse view of Rushmore. Looking out over their shoulders.

Just to clarify, you're talking about the 2013 ATB SPS, not the 2012.

I'm not real thrilled with Rushmore either... here were the candidates for the reverse:

New-Silver-ATB-Sets...what-The-Heck?

I guess I would have gone with 1 or 4. Or Crazy Horse as ghostrider suggested.

Personally I liked the 01 design the best. The one they picked isn't the greatest but not the worst. 2013 to me is just a weak year overall for ATB designs and probably the year that kills the pucks

I'm now imagining an alternate univers where Teddy Roosevelt is the obverse for the ATB series. Why do I live in this universe?

The problem with using Crazy Horse is that it is not a National Monument as it is privately funded, and it's nowhere close to complete. They could have used the Badlands or Wind Cave National Park, which would have been a nice change for the state. Given the four choices, I like what they chose. It's my favorite design from 2013 for sure.

I'd like to see them take all of the dead presidents off of the coins altogether and reconsider some of the pattern designs of the 1800's for possible use on our coins.

Honestly, everything else mentioned for S.D. really isn't going to make much of an interesting design. The bad lands are beautiful and one of my favorite places, but I just don't see it translating well on a coin. Given that, I like the different take on Rushmore. It's the best of the 5 IMO.

And I agree, thhis is absolutely the WORST of the yeas so far. I will buy the rolls and fill my books, but I am not counting on any of these to sell well at all.

I agree with smokeriderdon that 2013 ATB coinage has left a lot to be desired. On the plus side I don't think that any of these coins will displace Hot Springs as the worst design of the series so far. And I also agree that these coins may not sell so well.

I don't know how well thid coin will look on the 5 ounce coin. It should prove interesting.
