I've been looking at this 1923 penny listing on ebay. It has a strange look to me and I wondered if it had been cleaned. Here is a link:

If it's not cleaned, any suggestions why it has such an odd color. Just an artifact of the photography?

Cheers,
Rob

Yes, cleaned and re-toned...

Thanks to you all for your confirmation. Most appreciated! Jakedacc, I'm not so sure I have any instinct, but I do tend to be suspicious of any old pennies that aren't brown. But thanks for the kind words.

Here are a couple more from the same seller.

I am wondering if the first was also cleaned. By the way, I'm not trying to suggest the seller is cleaning them, as he lists many others that don't raise any warning flags. The coin in the second link looks fine to me, but I may be wrong, and if any of you feel like checking, I'd love to know if you agree or disagree.

Cheers,
Rob
P.S. I see the first coin I mentioned in this thread now has the highest number of bids of any Canadian small cent on ebay! So obviously others don't care a whit if it was cleaned.
