I have been looking for replacements for a couple of "problem" coins, and I thought that I found a potential candidate (https://goccf.com/t/136590) for the " Shield nickel with rays". The seller and I exchanged a few emails and there was silence for over three weeks since I requested images of the coin. The seller passed along the requested the certification number, just in case there may be an image on the Internet, and sure enough there was...with another dealer! At first I thought that it was an old image caught in the cache, but it was a new listing through a seller that I have dealt with before. I called him up and asked about it and he said that they just got in and that it was down at FUN. I bought it on 11 Jan 2013 at approx noon. I get a reply message (finally) from the earlier seller at 8:46 pm (same day) stating that the coin had been sold at FUN.

What kind of a deal is that, to sell to another dealer a coin that has stimulated interest from a potential customer from a month ago?

I want to send that original dealer a piece of my mind indicating that I am really ticked off that they dodged my questions and sold to another dealer.

In the end, I am glad that I got the coin and it was not from the guys who did not want to take images of their coins, even though requested by a potential buyer.

Yea that would tick me off also. Look at it this way you got your coin even though you may have paid a bit more and had to go around round robins barn to get it. Also you know not to ever deal with the first dealer and believe me word of mouth does get around.....yes

Yes, it was $20 more than the first seller, but it's mine now!

It's too bad that happened to you. You learned the hard way NOT to deal w/ the first dealer in the future.

I just LOVE the die cracks!

I'm afraid I go along with those other dealers. If salespeople went by all the POTENTIAL customers that may, might, could, etc., come back, there would be milliona waiting and waiting and waiting. I can't imagine how many people look at something in a store, flea market, coin show, etc. and tell the seller let me think about it. Or I'll walk around for a while and then let you know. Your own words of POTENTIAL customer is just that. A possible, maybe, might, could be a sale. Sales people are sales people to make money, not make people happy.

I can see where you are coming from Carl, I use the word "potential" in regards to a pending transaction. IF the first dealer would have provided the requested images, even from the cell phone, I would have have purchased it from them. What really steams my beans is the delay in communication (THREE WEEKS) between the request in taking the images and the dealer stating that it had been sold at FUN.

That brings up another thing, it was sold BEFORE FUN to another dealer in which I bought it from at FUN...unless these two dealers are on of the same? ...or the first dealer is "engaging in disinformation"...AKA lying.

the other dealer may have requested the coin be brought to FUN before you showed interest in it.

maybe the first dealer dodged you in loyalty to the first 'potential' customer (the other dealer)

Hard to get into someone's head to figure out why they do the things they do. Dealers have to scratch each others backs so that they can work more deals in the future. He must have decided the other dealer's business would benefit him more.

Took the words right out of my mouth, Indiangoldeagle. That is an amazing coin. The die cracks and a chip on the E to me would be worth a little pain in my neck.

Hmm... If this were the case, why would dealer A not let oih82w8 know that dealer B at FUN was interested in it before him.

My story is even sadder to me, Oh I Hate to Wait.

Last month, when I took in the local show, I discovered that a dollar with which I was interested had been sold.
No problem.

Later, as I was at another table, a favorite dealer, Vinny, came up to me with a 1799 Dollar. "Are you interested?"
"Uh, yes. I'll be over soon."
So far, so good.

The link to the pictures:
https://goccf.com/t/137735

Now, it was love at first sight. Over the years as I read the Red Book cover to cover, I would skip these early years as being coins
that I would never possess. And then, a lovely example was forced into my hands. Not a cent BUT A DOLLAR!
"Don't be afraid to hold it!" the dealer said. Not in plastic! RAW!
I held it, and I wanted it.

I had my complete set of Lincoln Wheat Cents with me. Earlier, yet another dealer pointed out to me a [very small] gouge in Lincoln's head.
The 1909-S VDB.
The 14-d was ok, but the other keydates were all problematic. So I thought,
"Can I negotiate a trade for the cents with the balance in cash?"

I did. The coin would be held for me until I sent him the balance due. It would NOT be offered at the FUN show.
No problem.

Now, the reason why I was annoyed. (Insert stronger word here.)

Brad had the coin and he consigned it to Vinny.
Both of the dealers have been good to me. I have bought from and sold to both.
Brad told me, "If I had known that you were interested in it, I could have sold directly to you and given you a break."
STILL not a problem.

What upset me was that (assuming that I believe Brad) when Brad asked Vinny how much it sold for Vinny lied and said that I paid
$100 LESS than what I had paid.

I was not upset that I paid more for the coin.
I WAS upset that one favorite dealer lied to another favorite dealer.

I was almost sick to my stomach.
Now, the next show is this Sunday. Before I say anything that I might regret, I am open to comments.

Like you, oih82w8, I have the coin in my hands and I am ecstatic with it. I keep looking on ebay for examples and so far they either
pale in comparison or are well into five digit prices. One additional thing: Brad's girlfriend asked me gingerly,
"Would you mind, from time to time, bringing it to the show so that I can look at it again?"

NO PROBLEM!!!!!!

(Sorry if I am usurping your topic, but
misery DOES love company!)

Die cracks - yes, I noticed them right away.
