I wouldn't even touch it without seeing the reverse as well as weight and size.

I see the reverse in the sale now. It looks ok to me, but I don't know these coins well.

Masis - Wow! I cant say I'm not jealous. Pricey coin but a great and famous design! I imagine having it in hand will be really great - perhaps a ren. wax coat could bring up those details.

Its a scene I like - Germanicus victorious. Seutonius has a great section on Germanicus (here: http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer...igula*.html). It describes his Adventus to Rome from one of the many many (many many many) Germanic uprisings - perhaps it is that which is on this coin:

Quote:
He was so popular with the masses, that, according to many writers, whenever he came to any place or left one, he was sometimes in danger of his life from the crowds that met him or saw him off; in fact, when he returned from Germany after quelling the outbreak, all the cohorts of the praetorian guard went forth to meet him, although orders had been given that only two should go, and the whole populace, regardless of age, sex, or rank, poured out of Rome as far as the twentieth milestone.

I took the plunge.

To be honest, I am getting bored of Late Roman Bronze coins.
I must have bought at least 600 last year.
I could draw you a "Fel Temp fallen horseman" blindfolded.

I was lucky to buy some early Imperial AE's in mixed lots last year and in the back of my mind I have wanted to get more from that era.
I hope this proves to be as advertised.

So here it is:

Germanicus (Nero Claudius Drusus)
24th May 15 BC - - " 10th October 19 AD
AE Dupondius

Obverse: GERMANICVS CAESAR, Germanicus, in a quadriga, going to the right, holding the reigns and a sceptre.
Reverse: SIGNIS RECEP DEVICTIS GERM S C, Germanicus, cuirassed, standing to the left, saluting with his right hand and holding an eagle-tipped sceptre with his left.

13.06 grams
28.5 x 29 x 2 mm
200 degrees

Rome, attributed to the reign of his son, emperor Caligula, 37 - 40 AD
R.I.C. 57, B.M.C. 94

A metal detecting find 3 miles from the town of Chinon, France, in 2010.
"3 miles from Chinon" is almost by the river Loire.
Found at what was said to be a Roman garrison site.
It is known that the prefered site for a garrison was by a river. Chinon is near the modern French cities of Loudun (about 15 miles south-west), Tours (Roman: Caesarodunum, about 30 miles north-east) and Angers (Roman: Juliomagus, about 50 miles north-west)

Much nicer in your pics! The coin was a work of art lovingly made. I wonder how many dies they made?

Thank you all, it is a privilege to own such a fine piece of history.
I managed to obtain the full name of the finder, so at least for records sake it is something.
