Here's a new one for me. I picked up an ICCS graded MS62 1920 small cent on ebay for my collection, or so I thought. The coin arrived today and it is a nice looking coin, problem free with a trace red. I'm not very experienced grading small cents, but MS62 could be correct. Looking at the details a little more, it is actually a 1935. They trend the same, but could ICCS have graded a '20 and a '35 and mixed up the cards making it so this may not be the correct grade?

Feedback from anyone who had any experience with this situation would be appreciated. I contacted the seller to let them know (there was no reverse pic in the listing and they have a 'no return' policy on graded coins).

Contact the seller. If they don't offer a return or refund, file a SNAD with PayPal.

I agree you should get the coin that you bid on 1920 not the ICCS holder unless you bidding on the holder

The problem here is philosophical (ethics IS part of philosophy). Grading/slabbing was devised to allow collectors buy pieces, sight unseen, trusting that the descriptions were true to the coins. It never meant to be an issue of "opinion," it was always an issue of trust.

Some companies are more trustful than others.

With time I grew tired and cynical. I own a fantastic "grading stupidities" collection that travels all pubs close to coin shows and believe me, your coin would be on the "minor" exhibit - there are much worse (worserer) cases.

Since you don't intend to fix the world, take the advice above and cut your losses but learn the lesson!

Learn to grade! It is easier than looks like.

Any chance that you will post some of them for all of us to see?

I would love to see pictures of a much, much worse case (just for my own curiousness as a YN, not sure if others would want to)

This will have to be cleared with the moderators first. I will inquire.

i get that TPG'd coins should offer some peace of mind when buying,
but I would still not buy a coin for $20 without seeing both sides of it.

I have a 1929 with 1919 stated on the ICCS certificate. Grading is correct though and it was identified as such when I bought it. I probably ended up paying a few bucks extra for it for the 'curiosity' value.

I received the green light to post some interesting slabs. Now I have to get someone to picture the coins for me, it may take a little time, but believe me -it will worth the wait. I will post as a new thread

After waivering, I did decide I liked the coin and am keeping it (buy the coin, right?). The seller, who had offered to refund my money plus shipping costs, said he checked his records and he had it graded by ICCS in 2001 with a '20 and both the '20 and '35 did come back as MS62. I would certainly have no reservations buying from him again. I'll try to snap a couple pics of the coin later.
