I won this coin on ebay, & got it in the mail about a week ago. In hand it looks nice, but something about it seems a little "off" to me. What do ya'll think?

Out of my expertise, but the luster and details seem right to me.

Hi trdhrdr007

Is the coin extremely blast white ?

Im just going by pics here ,, and its possible that the camera is telling me something different than the coin in hand ,, but if the coin is extremely blast white and appears somewhat smooth in the details , My guess is that its been chemically dipped .

I agree with Metalman that it could be dipped, (but not definitely). When I was at a coin show recently one dealer had a whole ton of apparently BU Mercurys that seemed way shinier than normal. I was talking to another dealer about them and he said that the dealer dipped most of his coins. I don't understand why he would have dipped them because they were nice coins anyway and he was selling them pretty cheaply.... Without the coin in hand it's hard to tell, it looks fine from the picture.

The coin is really bright white. "Smooth in the details" is not a phrase I would have come up with, but it seems to fit. The details are not quite "crisp", but they aren't worn either. Under a 10x loupe I can't see any sort of hairlines, or any other marks.

i have been looking at a ton of the Mecury dimes today. based on the 35 or so I went through (bought 6) i'd have to say that coin was dipped. it's too clean - almost frosty?.

here's an example of what I brought home today:

1945-Mercury

it still retains some of the mint luster, even after who knows how many years it spent in pockets, boxes, or on the floor in a closet.
