Preparing for the big withdrawal once banks stop releasing pennies in February... So how will you continue your habit and enjoyment once you can't go to the banks? (No, back away from the fountains.. Lol) ? I mean you can only have so many friends and family members to convince to change up their piggy banks.. (Semi-related comment: was shocked to pull a 1927 nickel from a roll of nickels.. Saw 192x and caught my breath and then I saw it wasn't 1925 or a very special 1926, boo..) *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I received my standing order of 4 boxes of pennies from the bank last week... All BU 2011... Not happy. My bank lady is ordering me 8 boxes this week and for the next 2 weeks. I will then go on a banking rampage at all banks I come across and buy as many as I can by months end.. Then I will become desperate and put ads on kijijji. That should keep me going for a while. As well my bank lady said she will sell me every penny that comes in after Feb.4th instead of turning them in.

Our local Church has a 'penny crusade' every year, people deposit their pennies and change in the bucket for 8 weeks.. and... we get to look through them.. So, I presume when the penny is no more, we still get to count the other change..finding , nickel 'nickels' silver dimes- silver quarters, stuff like that.

My long range plan is to switch to nickel and dime roll hunting when supplies dry up!

I've already got 12 boxes sitting here with me. Tomorrow I will place an order at bank A for 10 boxes + clear out what they have. Then I will go to bank B and clear out what they have + order 10 boxes. Then I will go to bank C every chance I get until Feb 4th and clear them out. After that date I should have enough to keep me going for a while.

Is the mint not just making anymore due to cost?

It's Canada, Kritler. They discontinued the minting of the penny up there last year.
As an American who loves getting Canadian pennies in my rolls, I'm going to be sad that I'll probably never get to look through a box of Canadian pennies.

For all those ordering boxes, wouldn't you be getting new ones from the Mint, all plastic wrapped with no variety? I'm looking for mixed rolls, is there a way to specify that when ordering boxes or do you just get what you get?

You can't specify what you want. The bank places the order and they never know what will come in. I'm in Alberta and I think there is a processing unit around that receives and ships coins to the Alberta banks. I've received lots of assorted bank wrapped rolls from Winnipeg which is good sorting, brand new mint rolls, a few times hand wrapped rolls from various Alberta banks.
You could always walk into a bank and ask for a box. If they ask tell them you are trying to complete a collection, so a variety box or customer wrapped rolls is what you are after. I have never been denied,, even at banks I dont have an acct with.

Around here in southern Ontario some of the banks are already starting to dry up, and they're only placing very minimum orders for pennies. I try to buy up what I can but I'm up against competition and I think the next 2 weeks are going to be tough...

i wish I had kept the 40 rolls I got when I was went up there with my dad for family vacations when I was a youngster. I've always had a thing for canadian pennies. well, tbh I think all canadian coins I've seen are beautiful. I dont know what I would do if the us were to discontinue and then recall the cent. I suppose get as many boxes as I possibley could and ride that for as long as I could. I feel bad for you guys. the melt ban also means you cant just hop the border and snag some boxes of US coins as far as I understand. I'm going to miss canadian pennies, I'm sure they will soon disappear from the us circulation to a greater extent than already.

New idea, approach McDonald's in your area and buy the change they from the charity box they leave under the drive through window. A friend of mine has been doing this for a while you would be surprised what he has come up with. Besides the McDonald's Managervwould rather deal with a few bills then a bunch of change.....

Yeah, I've seen people acting weird about it. Some are going into the banks to buy up as many boxes as they can to hoard them, while others are cashing in as many as they can to get rid of them. A lot of penny action across the bank counters. Me, I'me one of the hoarders, but then I like varieties and errors, so I need my stash to go through and search them out. Otherwise in 2 weeks I'd be at the mercy of the dealers, and that can be expensive...

If I am understanding the law correctly getting rolls/boxes of american pennies to canadian hunters to help fill the void to be left by the canadian cent going away is actually not that hard if you guys knew someone in the states who would be willing to ship them to you and some flat rate boxes to ship them in. while "travelers" can only take back $5 worth on them you can ship up to $100 in pennies if for numistatic purposes. this is what the mint page says. "The regulations also prohibit the unlicensed exportation of these coins, except that travelers may take up to $5 in these coins out of the country, and individuals may ship up to $100 in these coins out of the country in any one shipment for legitimate coinage and numismatic purposes."

Picked up 6 boxes so far.. Overdid it and spent too many hours with one box and woke up with the neck in spasm, haha.. But it was worth it, someone decided to dump some great coins.. In one roll: CDN 1921,'27,'28x2, '33 US (Drum roll..) 1890, 1902x2, 1906, of course all Indian Heads, never seen one before then..
I'm going to put pics up in the grading forum for people to give me an idea of quality
