A friend of mine who isn't a coin collector, he's a goldsmith who works in a jewelry store that buys gold and silver for scrap and also buys coins, asked me if I knew why the 3 in 1934 was different than the 3's for the rest of the 1930's. I told him I didn't know that it was different. I don't collect nor ever have collected Lincoln cents by date.

If anyone here knows the reason the Mint changed the style of the 3 for that year please tell.

I noticed this too a while ago and was wondering the same thing. The style of 3 used in 1934 is the same one that they've used from 1943-present. Will be interesting to see what the experts have to say.

This was the only 1930's cent to use that style of three. The next time it was seen was in 1943. Chuck's book mentions this, but does not give a reason.

Really? This is interesting. Maybe this is a far fetched idea, but do you guys think there is a tiny chance that they made a 1934 with the normal pre-1943 "3" style? An idea for an unknown variety to search! :D
