Why do prices vary dearing different times of the day? And why when ebay has millions of users can I sell the same items at a coin only auction site and get over twice as much? I figure that at about 9-9:30 Eastren time is the best time for auctions. 6 O' Clock on the west coast and not to late for us people on the east coast. Any other suggestions?

Why I think we should all check out BidCoin.com and see if we can double our money! I'll check in at 9:00AM Eastren time (is this short for "East Trenton" time?) And if that does not work out, I can wait until 6' feet O'clock on the Left coast. Hey Benny buddy, take out an ad!!!!LOL, never mind I guess you already have!!Mike

Would the "coin only auction" that realizes twice the price for the same coins be bidcoin.com by chance?

My best prices are realized at Bowers and Merena. Of course, they only offer numismatic items, so maybe there is something to this logic..........

I think selling prices are better on weekends as that is when the average collector has money to spend. If I sell, which is seldom, it is listed for a weekend ending. As a buyer, I really don't care when the item is coming off, if I want the item badly I will be there at the end. If you REALLY want to make good money on common date, worn out junk coins, just roll them up and find an estate auction to sell them for you. I have seen circulated clad Kennedy rolls bring $70 per roll and worn out Barber quarters, that could be inspected prior to the auction, bringing $170 per roll. I am sure, without a doubt, these folks were not collectors, and don't have a clue why they wanted the items but I have never seen any auctions bring the money estate sales (on site) auctions bring. I have also attended coin only auctions and watched the dealers and collectors just shake their heads in disgust as coins brought unbelievable prices. As a seller, nothing is better around here! It is just a shame I am ONLY a collector!

I'm with Terry on the timing of coin auctions. I've always found that I seem to get better prices when I manage the ending date on a Sunday evening, late enough so that left coast bidders have a chance, but not so late that right coasties have gone to bed and don't have the chance to outbid the western time zones. Eight to ten PM Eastern time seems to be good for me, but others might make it a little later. The name of the game is maximum numbers of lookers, watchers, and bidders, so with a weekend ending, the object is to attract those who don't have a chance to look during weekdays. For me, there's also another practical aspect: I time my auctions such that I can mail out the coins on Mondays. I live too far from the Post Office to be commuting back and forth several days of the week. BidCoin_com, I'd like to see specific examples of online coin-only auction sites in which the sale has brought twice as much as on ebay. While I am certain there are always exceptions, I just don't see coin-only auction sites bringing in more than ebay, at least on most coins; the larger the audience, the more likely any particular coin will sell for a higher price, all other things being equal. If one wants top dollar for a specific coin, then best list with Heritage or Bowers & Merena as ND states, but even then, unless the coin is particularly desirable, it's not likely to fetch much more than the going rate although, like all generalities, there's always exceptions.

Are you guys responding to this thread tongue in cheek or seriously? I think BidCoin_com just got himself some clever free advertising! I think collect4fun caught it based on the reply. Read the thread through again and I think it will put a smile on your face!!!Mike

Mike, I was giving BidCoin_com the benefit of the doubt; he might be caught up with the enthusiasm of an early success on the sale of a coin. I checked out his site, wasn't particularly impressed with the numbers, but it's still new and I think he could use all the advertising, free and otherwise, that he can get; he's in direct competition with ebay, the most powerful force on the online coin auction market. Of course, if it gets built up to be a major player, then ebay will buy him out (which might be his ultimate strategy). Still, at this point, he needs a LOT more listings and a LOT more potential buyers.
