Two I acquired at FUN. Same 1781 date; I'm going to flip one to help pay for them. The first is lesser-graded but nicely centered, which I gather isn't commonplace for these. It's the heavier, at 81.44g(!). Like so:

The second has much nicer details but an off-center strike. 78.03g.

Both are darker in-hand, of course - duplicating the color would require an underexposure which would kill the details. So which one do I keep?

Nice shots--I prefer the first one. 81.44g? That's 3X the weight of a Morgan $1!

I as well would prefer to keep the heavy one. Then again I would end up keeping both just because I love those coins.

Well, sell one or trade it for another date because I can already see what's coming for me....

The coins pictured here show minor wear in all of the normal places you go looking for wear, that is typical for them.

Most often they are found with a rich chocolate patina, and quite often the patination has a greasy feeling to the surface.

Both are nice.
They present a slight problem with storage. They need to go into 2 1/2 x 2 1/2's, be they Mylar cardboard, or Saflips.
That means you also need the 12 pocket 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 album pages.

They are both great! I love large chunky coppers from the 17-1800's. Of the two I would keep coin #1.

I picked up my first one of these last weekend at NYINC:D I will share when I get pics.

Copper does funny things under bright lighting, sel; these both have that nice chocolate color you mention although the heavier coin is slightly darker than the other. They reside in Saflips as do all of my coins, boxed rather than in an album. Once I get drug into the date set I see as an inevitability, I'll explore an album solution.

So far, 81.44g is the heaviest weight I've ever heard mentioned for one; indeed, the only one over 80g. That's the one I'm keeping.
