I agree that books are the way to go for "education". However, there is quite a bit that may be gleaned from periodic publications. If you have a specific interest, you can join a numismatic society and (usually) receive their journals which are normally packed with information. For a more general approach, you can join the ANA (money.org) and receive The Numismatist publication.
I personally subscribe to all of the Krause Publications magazines, including Numismatic News and Coins Magazine. They are a mixture of commentary, propaganda, and good solid information on coins.
Their publications are fairly reasonably priced if you go with a subscription (rather than buying at a newstand or store). Coins Magazine is published monthly, as well as the Bank Note Reporter and World Coin News. The Numismatic News is published weekly. Unfortunately, some of the material is regurgitated between the publications.
Education-wise, going through a venue such as ebay or Abebooks may be a better bet and search for some older magazines and books on numismatics. Although books are more expensive piece-wise, they usually contain much more valuable information all around.
