Hi just wanted to ask a quick question. How accurate are the grades which are assigned by the auction companies to the coins particularly with Downies, Status International and Edlins?
Thanks in advance

Status and Edlins I would trust as far as I could throw them, selling cleaned/dipped coins without declaring them and just generally selling some dodgy stock.
IAG slightly overgrade coins but not by much.
Downies are pretty spot on with grading.
Nobles are quite strict and harsh (hence fair to the buyer) with their grading.
Just my take.

Okay thanks so noble is the best followed by downies and I agree somewhat with your oppinion on edlins and status although they have also significantly undergraded coins as well so I have gotten a few deals from them notably some of my prize coins 1870 sydney mint sovereign and my 1910 and 1914H florin I will see if I can find the old pictures:/

I hav e found that Nobles undergrade coins and sometimes by quite a bit so the buyer is definately covered

My opinion is nobles is pretty poor at grading. I have been both disappointed and elated as a buyer. I have won lots and then a few years later sold the same coins and they were given different grades. I have found Downies and roxburys to be infinately more consistent.

I have bought from every auction house and I can tell you now, they all under/over grade, in most cases overgrade. They overgrade to hopefully sell of hard to move items to buyers who dunno what they are doing (I've been done by Nobles, Downies and IAG in the past) and they undergrade also for various reasons..for advertising.. to create interest/more biding, etc.. Make no mistake they all know exactly what they doing.. I am not being harsh, being honest only. Overgrading may also mean not stating certain aspects of the item. I specialise in banknotes rather than coins, so I speak for banknote grading only. This is why the best advice I can give, is to view all items before bidding. I speak from experience. If I had a dollar for everytime I look at an auction and see items misgraded, I'd be rich ! That goes for ebay as well. Look at any catalogue and it's quite normal to see two same coins or two same notee described the same, but end very different prices or one even passed in.

Being in Perth limits my ability to get to most of the main auctions that occur in Sydney or Melbourne. After some negative experiences, I am buying fewer coins through the auction houses and more through other sources, usually smaller online sellers who have proven very reliable.

I would never buy a coin from any auction house without either seeing the coin myself or getting someone I trust to see the coin for me. Take from that what you will.

Quote: I would never buy a coin from any auction house without either seeing the coin myself or getting someone I trust to see the coin for me. A big +1 on this comment. Interesting that no-one has yet commented about Roxbury's in Brisbane. Could mean two things. Either they grade accurately, or no-one has heard of them.

I mentioned Roxburys in my post. Roxburys is my auction house of choice for selling things. I have put well over $100k through them over the last 3 years. I just think Roxburys work harder for me than any other auction house and I am generally happy with the prices.
For reasons I will not go into I will never bid on or put items through Nobles. Nobles will never make another cent out me.
