I go through a lot of cent, nickel and dime rolls and keep the nicer ones .I put them in rolls according to the dates .Was wondering especially on the pennies ,will a dirty or corroded coin effect the coin thats stored beside it in the roll? I do clean them with a soft cotton cloth before putting them away. Thanks

Are you talking about circulated coins? You really shouldn't be cleaning them with a cloth or cleaning them at all for that matter.

Pennies are definitely the worst to roll hunt imo. Half the time when you find one you need it is covered in junk or worse. Definitely keep those away from unaffected coins and like John mentioned cleaning them ruins the surface and the value. Its really not that big of a deal for the common modern coins that have little to no premium but if you ever did that to some of the rare ones you would be out a lot of money

These coins have been around for 30-40-50 years, been in thousands of peoples pockets, ashtrays, cash registers and who knows where and your saying it ruins them to simply lightly clean them with a soft cotton cloth.. I dont believe that...

As of right now cleaning coins is a no no for numismatic coins. Go look on ebay for coins that are graded. Look at the difference between an xf coin and an xf details coin. You can be talking 100s of dollars or more in the value once its been cleaned for a valuable coin. Theres also little difference between a light cleaning and a harsh one in terms of value, cleaned is cleaned and can only be undone wearing down the details until that surface has been removed.

You dont have to believe it if you dont want to but theres a reason why EVERYONE says not to clean the coin and it has nothing to do with their personal taste. For most cents it wont matter but if you clean a 1909 s vdb or something like that you just cost yourself several hundred in value

Just because a coin today has little to no premium doesn't mean that that same coin in the future won't hold a premium or less of a premium because it was lightly cleaned or just plain old cleaned. IMHO

ah, so the green nastiness on pennies is verdigris? Now that I know it spreads, I better make sure I toss all of those guys in the "nasty" bin. Also, after looking up verdigris, I finally learned that the statue of liberty was not originally green! Learned two things from one thread. Love this site!

When I search a roll; I take the ones that have luster or those that are clean and put them aside. I also take out those that I want to check for errors whether or not they are clean or a little dirty. I check them and discard the rest in my cash in pile. I then check them again and only keep the best examples of all that I have put aside and put them in tubes for storing to be put in albums later. And yes cents seem to be the worse of the lot in terms of being worn, dirty, and just plain nasty. he he
