I just found this video on youtube.
Nutshell: These young guys get a car towed and have to pay an $88 fine. They pay in pennies, and get the cops to back them up because it is legal tender!
I bet lincoln is turning over in his grave when he sees pranks like this!

Thoughts? How long can the penny last in the US if people keep pulling this stunt?
BTW, canadian pennies are almost gone (feb 4th)! anyone stashing some away?

I'd take them in payment in a heartbeat. They'd be at the house that evening being searched for little treasures.

I think they do have the right to refuse the pennies as payment because they are not rolled. I am not sure what happens though if they refuse.
That being said, I would take them also.

Im not positive either what happens if they refuse payment, but I disapprove of people doing things like that. Everywhere should take change within reason but if someone tries to pay with a ton of pennies they should have the right to refuse if they dont want to. Generally it seems people either do that to be a jerk like I'm sure was the case here, or to avoid fees at their bank depositing it. Either way theyre creating a mess for who ever is on the other end of it.

In most countries leglislation provides a limit on the number of each denomination that may be refused as legal tender.

There was a case where a man owed (ex wife?) around 15,000 dollars and he paid in pennies. He thought he was being cute. He brought the pennies in a wheel barrel and dumped them on her porch. She took him to court and a judge ordered him to clean the mess and pay in a denomination that would be reasonably in proportion to the amount owed. Basically, the judge said by paying her in all those pennies you create undue stress and work/time that should not be incurred by paying a dept (not sure about the exact legal precedence or terminology).

He parked somewhere he shouldn't of, because like too many kids today, he feels the World owes him everything. Welcome to reality childish punk.

Paying with pennies is absolutely reasonable, atleast the rolled ones. Why should he have to waste his time to go to a bank and get them counted.. not his problem. Legal Tender = Legal Payment

I've never heard of a law about coins being rolled, nor a situation where tender can be refused. Does anyone know the specifics for US laws?

I probably would have offered the tow company a little extra just to get my hands/loupe on those pennies lol.

Thoughts I must be getting grumpy in my old age. As a CRH, I would take them. That being said, from the video, this is a private tow yard. If I was a business owner, it would be well within my rights to refuse to service to anyone. I do not have to take their pennies. In fact, I can refuse to take all forms of cash. Maybe for "security reasons" I now only accept debit cards, credit cards, postal money order, and Paypal. I have your car, if you want it back you will pay in a way I see as reasonable. Otherwise, I will keep your car, you'll keep racking up storage charges. Don't like it, sue me and tell it to the judge. Maybe we'll get to court long after I have auctioned off your car. If those young men want to make it a Federal matter, I would say, "go for it." Let's see if the Feds want to get involved in such a petty matter. As for the local cops, it is a civil matter and I would tell them to pound sand as well. I may also tell them to enforce the local trespassing laws, tell those young men to leave my property and come back when they have some more appropriate forms of payment. Must be a small town where the seven cops have nothing better to do than to stand around for an hour wasting taxpayer money on juvenile games.

15,000.00 worth of pennies ? In a wheelbarrow ? Yeah, I don't think so.

The funny thing is, the "juvenile game" is legal and a result of a broken monetary system. The cent is FAR beyond purchasing power. They are so worthless due to inflation. That's what makes this prank possible.
Canada is just weeks away from abolishing the cent, and rightly so. It has no place as tender, IMHO. It takes more of our tax money to make those pennies than they are worth. Sure, we can get our 1 to 4 cents back but it costs 3-10 cents to make those buggers! That;s OUR tax money!
As much as I like collecting them, the cent has to go. Plus zicolns are yucky anyway
They should abolish the US cent and leave them on the curb outside our local banks in buckets :)

I'd take'em because like others here I like roll searching. :-)
However, it's pranks like this (on top of copious amounts of other reasons) that make me advocate against keeping the penny in circulation.

Sure hope there's nothing serious going on down the street these cops could be preventing while dealing with these punk little girls.
