Is your coin collection a highly specialized collection built around collecting goals that are strictly adhered to (such as a complete set of Wheat Cents in Choice BU) or is it more of an accumulation of things that caught your eye and you liked so you added them to your collection? I will openly admit that like many other coin collectors I fall into the latter category although I do have some idea of what I'm trying to accomplish and I don't just purchase everything in sight. Personally I started collecting in my early teens with a very limited coin budget so I often bought a lot of low end items such as common circulated wheat cents, Buffalo nickels, and Mercury dimes. Now into my early twenties I'm starting to try to collect quality items over quantity but it's still difficult to not pick up duplicates (or triplicates) and to avoid branching off into other series when previous sets are still uncompleted. Sometimes I think that coin collectors need something like Alcoholics Anonymous because this hobby can become addicting very quickly and you need to frequently scratch the collecting itch. CCF can be very helpful in that regard since we can live vicariously through other collectors and thus have the willpower make fewer purchases ourselves I'm sure many of you have either seen or heard of the Hoarder themed shows on cable television that have became popular in the past several years where people collect vast amounts of stuff due to emotional attachments and the obsessive urge to acquire more. Do you see any correlation between some of the traits found in hoarders and the urge to collect that coin enthusiasts have? Are you able to adhere to your collecting goals or are you an accumulator as well that collects a little bit of everything from classic coins to moderns to tokens to foreign coins to bullion to currency and so on if it catches your eye? Would I get thrown out of meetings if I had any loose change in my pocket?

I think it becomes a hoard when it's buried. I collect Indian and Islamic, so I have the luxury of defining what a set is, unlike collectors who limit themselves to strictly defined bounds. I get to have a free form collection which spans 2500 years. I also picked up Arabic along the way (add to Russian, French, Spanish and dutch I already speak). Add interaction with people all over the world, and you have the experience of a lifetime. I don't look at my collection as a hoard but as a record of my shifting interests over time. Gonna sound cheesy but that scene in "Throw Momma Off The Train" where Owen is showing Billy Crystal his coins is so true! Happy hoarding!

Can I say I am not a hoarder if I keep it organized?

I know I am in a hoarding phase right now because I went to a coin show with a list of about 40 coins to help move my sets along... I bought 10 coins and 3 were on the list... Not really a great execution of the plan

I also do a bit of both. I have several specialized sets and collections (counterfeits, album sets, ASEs, Venezuelan 5 Bolivares, proof sets, coins I have inherited) and several hordes (my daughters' CRH finds, my CRH finds, boxes of coins *awaiting* CRHing, junk silver, picked-over copper pennies). :-) Because I'm a trained librarian both categories tend to be *over*-organized... :-)

I think a little bit of both. Plug holes in an album and hoard other things.

I started my collection by type collecting US coins. After that, I found myself drawn more towards Indian Head cents. From there, my interests went to Civil War tokens. Now I find myself wanting to sell off everything EXCEPT for the IHC & CW tokens, and continuing down that path. I don't think I'm a hoarder by any means, but the coin collecting obsession has grabbed me and I can't break free of it's grasp.
