Wow... Watching HSN again and they were selling the 1986 Proof ASE with OGP for $179.95...speechless. I know they have to make money to cover all the costs of TV, etc, but wow. Bets part was they sold out, he had 150 of them and they sold out in 5 minutes. I bought mine in a local coin shop for $60 out the door. It amazes me to think of the people that actually buy this stuff off TV, they probably think they are leaving their families well off when they leave their HSN sourced coin collection. I still love to watch these shows, if nothing else, just for a laugh.

These type of programs are for entertainment purposes only in my house.

I watch every week, I would never buy anything from him, but Mike Mizack is knowledgeable about coins and if you can weed out the carnival barker presentation, he does have a lot of good, albiet exaggerated information. It is impressive that he " fleeces the flock " for about 1bil dollars worth of coins a year. HSN loves him.

I can only watch for a few minutes at a time and then literally have to walk away. Hubby likes to put the shows on just to see my reaction - that was his half time entertainment last night between football games!
EDIT: Oh, and my FAVORITE comment from last night was "Our operators are friendlier!"

Same here! Shows like HSN are my comedy channel when it comes to coins!

More often than not, they are selling the packaging more than the coin. "Early Release", "First Strike", etc.

My parents/grandparents used to buy me gifts a couple times a year from these crooks (meaning the whole lot of them, not singling out one). I'd get a couple items/whizzed coin sets on my birthday, and then for Christmas.
It made me SO SICK, but I didn't say anything for a few years, not wanting to hurt their feelings.
Finally I had to, which made me just as sick as watching them buy the crap. The final straw was finding out just how much they paid of one of the whizzed custom silver dollar sets they purchased me. It was like $250 for 6 or 7 polished silver dollar coins, and not all were even 90%! To make it worse in hindsight, silver was around $4 an oz at that time!

The saddest part are the people buying the gold plated quarters thinking that they're worth something.

I can barely contemplate the existence of these people without flying into irrational rage, much less watch their programming.

Quote: I watch every week Is there a particular time it is on every week? I like to watch him for informational purposes. I have never bought anything from him and doubt I ever will. The only thing I have considered is the Silver American Eagle with the 4 coin grading certificate. That really brings the price down somewhat and gives the ability to send in some coins for grading. I set up a series recording on my DVR for "Coin Collector" here in the northeast for HSN. He is on usually 3-4AM and then a prime time show here and there 8-9PM. Since I just record them, I never pay attention to when they come on, I just look in my DVR listing and see when they are available to watch.
I like to watch for informational also, I hate the layered and colored coins and he really hawks them, especially the complete quarter sets, no show is complete without a quarter set in some form or the other, but I guess that is a small enough investment to hook most people into buying more and more (Auto Ship).
The 4 coin grading certificate would be worth it if it was NGC or PCGS, ANACS and ICG are looked down upon it seems and holds lesser value.

Quote: Is there a particular time it is on every week? It is mostly on at 2 or 3 in the morning. Nothing like an insomniac with a credit card and no life to boost coin sales The grading is only worth it if you want your coins graded by ANACS and is probably the economy package, where you send your coins in, they look at them at their leisure when they are slow and 3-4 months later you get your coins back. And hopefully it is not part of a " have to join ANACS " first scam.

To his credit, I do believe he said it is a 15 day turn around for the 4 coin grading...but denco7 raised a good point, it might be to lure you into something else that they are not advertising, anyone ever buy the coin that came with the 4 coin grading cert? what was your experience?
