Hey Everyone,
sighhhhh. I recently purchased a really cool and rare silver (.925) proof coin off of ebay. It arrived today. The seller put a small piece of tissue inside the capsule to prevent the coin from banging around....even though the coin doesn't move around in the capsule. Anyway, I noticed there were some fingerprints or some type of grease on the coin :( I paid an arm and a leg for this. Ahhhhhhh, I just noticed the whole edge is tarnished. It's black on the side closer to the reverse. I really like this coin and don't want to go through the trouble of returning it. What should I do? Should I try to clean it? I'm really sad
p.s. in the listing they say there are no problems with this coin and that the scratches are only on the holder. But the problem isn't the scratches.

What do you mean by a pretty penny? I don't know many sterling coins worth that much. Most of the time a coin dipped properly is the way to go. There is nothing wrong with cleaning coins the problem is improperly cleaning them. If it was under $50 I would keep as the return process won't be worth it to me for less then say $50.

It's 15.55 g sterling silver. I paid around $100 US for the coin and $29 shipping :( I've never returned anything on ebay before. Should I take pictures to cover myself? Sigh....

I would just resell it an take a small loss. The guy probably won't refund you on the shipping and may not refund you at all. Email him and see what he says

Okay, I'll email the seller and explain the situation. Fingers crossed

I sell on ebay a lot, a good seller would work out something fair. He should at least give you a partial refund for the description not being accurate. Or maybe he could pay the return shipping. It's his fault for not describing the coin properly. I would tell him you're sorry but you'll have to leave negative feedback unless he can rectify the situation. If he had mentioned the flaws in the description I would have a different opinion. I hope this helps. ðŸ'¹

What is it out of curiosity. You can try giving it an acetone dip, but if they wont refund shipping (which I doubt they will) it wont be worth it to return it with what you paid for shipping plus youll have to pay to ship it back.

I agree w/ Penny4---If I was in your shoes, I'd return it. If you however do keep it, cleaning it may well destroy some, most or nearly all of its value. I suspect you'll never be happy with the coin if you do keep it.
Nonetheless, condolences on your anguish. Hope all works out to your satisfaction.

Hi and thanks for all your replies. You're right, I will never be happy with this coin. I contacted the seller and they said they're sure there weren't any grease on the coin. Maybe I didn't describe it correctly. It looks like some dried up substance. Anyway, they said they will refund me the purchase price of the coin. I don't know if that means I won't get the shipping back. So $29 plus ~$17 to ship back(got the estimate from Canada post), I'll be out $46 :( Penny4me, do I have to open a case to get the full $129 back? I told the seller I wish to resolve it and not have to file an SNAD :(

At least ask the seller to pay half the return shipping, he didn't mention the tarnish. You shouldn't lose any money for a poor description by a seller.

Why not post the auction listing and a picture so we can decide? I have been dealing on ebay for 10 years with not a single negative but it does seem like some buyers have unreal expectations of the product. You may be able to return but I doubt highly he will pay your return shipping.
