I just had a friend bring me back $25 in pennies from Canada (I live in NY and my school buddy lives up north in CA).

First off, is it a good idea to hoard some CA cents? I mean, the are going to be removed from circulation... does that mean melted? Will they maybe be worth something down the road?

Or will they be worth only the metal that comprises them?

I'm thinking of having him get me some more. Feb 4th they will be unavailable to the public, right?

Also, in hunting through these, what error/varieties does one look for? Currently, when I get CA cents I just separate them by year.

Thanks for any help!

This topic has been briefly revisited recently:

There are other threads alike. I'm no expert on pennies. But if you are able to find a 2006 no P no logo magnetic, it would worth your while.

Broseph,
This article is about the best I've seen:
http://www.obj.ca/Canada%20-%20Worl...se-pennies/1

I note a spokesman from RBC says they will stop giving them out on the fourth of February. I expect the other banks will do the same.

As far as sources for for learning about errors & varieties, this link lists a few:

This whole website is informative.

Hope this helps a little.

Cheers,
Rob

I doubt they will ever allow legal melting of the Penny.

Thanks for the info!

It seems they will be melting them most likely, from what that article says, yet fining people who melt them! looks like they really want that metal back...

What will happen when people try to take pennies to banks? Will they no longer accept them? And stores?

And to Anjohl, that article states that it will still be illegal for people to melt cents, only the gov will be able to.

I can see many stores refusing pennies after February 4th, but I thought there was a grace period of 1 or 2 years before they would no longer be accepted.

CoinStar and other change machines would still accept unless they are calibrated not too.
