I just bought a lot of semi-key Buffalo nickels in low grades. I noticed the 1913D Variety 2 had a grade written on it of G. I looked up the value in the RedBook and it states it has a retail price of $120 but Numismedia says it should cost $84. In that case what source would you use?

Numismedia hands down. Also check ebay for prices realized.

Like John said numismedia and completed ebay listings for prices. Redbooks are good for a lot of things but prices arent one of them. Theyre almost always high and the prices are essentially outdated by the time it gets published

I noticed that for some coins, RedBook is higher but for others, numismedia is. Numismedia is higher for V nickels but lower for Indian heads and Buffalo nickels.

Red Book price are ballpark figures. It's a great reference book but the prices cannot be trusted.

That is why these are all called guides. As always the marketplace determines the price.
As in all collectibles they are only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. That is why there are huge disparities in the hammer price of many identical coins.

As already stated you must remember that all price guides are just that, GUIDES. They are not real values, only a guide to what may, might, could, should, be. The Red Book is sort of accurate but only if you use one about 3 to 4 years old. I presently use the 2010 edition for prices. That one gets sort of close. The Red Book is noted to be rather many years into the future with their values.
Always remember there is no manufacturers suggested list price on coins. They are what ever someone will pay for one.

Yes, I know these are just guides and a coin's value is what someone else would pay you for it. I know they use the gray sheet at shops and some are stricter than others. My point is that if you are using a guide to get a general idea of the value which one would you trust more if their prices conflict? I always pick the lowest. IHCs and buffs I use Numismedia but for V nickels I use RedBook because the prices on Numismedia seems to high to me. I buy and sell them so I have an idea what they are worth but you know how auctions can be with wild swings in prices.

I know that the 1938 D in the red-book is way to high...
