This just came in the mail :)

2004 Entente Cordiale CU-Ni Proof
Minted in commemoration of the 100th ann. of the Entente Cordiale between France and Britain. The top figure is Marianne (seen on many Franc coins) and the bottom one is Britannia.

The Queen will be 81 on 21st April so I think she is looking just fine on the coins and in real life.

I think it's medal rotation like most UK coins..I think its actually upside down in this pic, since britannia is most likely on top, haha.

I would assume it's aligned to keep collectors from both countries happy... For British collectors, used to medal rotation, Britannia would be right way up. For French collectors, used to coin rotation, Marianne. So the answer to your question is "both"!

The theme of the coin does make a nice change... the 100th anniversary of a peace treaty between two countries which had been at war on-and-off for centuries. Maybe there's hope for the Humans of Earth after all...

This particular coin did not go down to well when it came out, Marianne seems to be carry a club, may be trying to beat up britannian or something like that. Personally this years coin is much better, a nice pattern, designed hundreds of years ago.
