I have a 1947 Roosevelt dime I found circulating years ago and always wondered where the B stamped in it may have came from. To me it almost looks like the B from liberty that may have been from a larger coin but the stamp is indented rather than a relief. Perhaps a coin from a new die marked for quality control that may have made it out the door. Not sure but I welcome any input.
You have what is known as a "counterstamped coin" and you may notice a corresponding flat spot on the reverse from the punch. It was done post-mint and only the person that did it could tell you why it was done.
This kind of counterstamp is not really collectible. You can buy these stamps and make your own. Most machine shops keep a set of number and letter stamps like these to id parts.
