I couldn't believe the price given what they are going for on ebay. I told the clerk that was a good deal on a 2012 Silver Proof Set and he didn't really say much of anything back. Should I pick that bad boy up?

I bought one last year from the mint at issue price, I was thinking of doubling up. This dealer doesn't have low prices making me wonder if the prices of the sets are going to come back down or if they aren't in the know of the low mintage of it.

They probably haven't got supply and demand memo yet. It is the lowest final mintage of all the modern silver sets. The only set I have seen going at super premiums at auctions is the 1999 set ( first year of State Quarters ). And that had a mintage of 2 1/2 times this set. Proof sets are funny, they never seem to follow the low mintage = higher price model.

Some of that too may just be what his demand from his buyers are too. Some dealers treat commems as bullion because they dont have the buyers for them for example. He may have gotten it cheap and would rather sell for a small profit than sit on it for a while trying to get top dollar. As far as future prices who knows. It has the best chance of holding its value from a mintage standpoint but the demand needs to be there too. My guess would be that itll get an initial spike, level off and come back down some once people get the ones they want and then be affected by next years mintage as well. What I mean by that is if next years is real low too and that looks like itll be the norm its price will fall some, if next years returns to normal and it becomes an outlier itll hold or increase but only time will tell

Sets going for $65 on ebay really suprise me, given that some ebay auctions have them going to $100 or more, and there are some recent Buy It Now purchases of up to $115. Who is ever selling these for $65 must want to get rid of them quickly.

It seems like modern proof sets generally are considered junk because supply always outstrips demand. Silver proof sets can often be found near melt. The 1999 silver proof set was an exception, but I wonder if that's a hype issue over the low mintage and being the first State Quarters set, rather than a supply/demand one. 2012 seems to be radically lower though, so maybe it's low enough to actually make for stickier high price. Hard to tell right now because people are so hyped about the mintage announcement.

Details, details, details. The link from SsuperDdave looks to be the clad set, not the silver proof set for which the OP was inquiring. At any rate, if I had a local dealer selling the silver proof sets for $72 each, I'd be snapping them up and reselling on ebay. Even after the fees, you'd make a $13 per set profit if you managed to sell for $100 each.

Can I ask this? What's good about buying the silver proof set? Like what do you guys buy them for? Are you just getting all the types of coins in silver proofs?
Now this isn't a question to be hateful, I like all coins but I never bought the proof silver sets. My dealer had them pretty cheap when they came out but they sold out. I was about to buy one but I didn't know if it's worth to buy.

The 5 Quarters, the half dollar, and the dime are all silver (90%). The rest are made up of various materials. The C of A that comes with it tells you what each coin is made of and how much they weigh. I buy them because I like them They are so cool looking and for the few extra bucks, I like having the silver version. Knowing those coins are made of silver just makes it an awesome thing to own. I need to get smarter and buy them when they are being sold at the mint so I can quit paying the premiums though. Does anyone know when the 2013 silver proof set is going to be available? Thanks.
