Snag it at that price all day every day.

It seems like modern proof sets generally are considered junk because supply always outstrips demand.

And see, that's where I have an issue. Proof sets have never been minted in the tens of millions. Relatively speaking, they are rather low mintages. Then take away a bunch because of quality issues. The take away a WHOLE lot due to being broken up. In the end, I would bet good money you could, on average, halve the mintage numbers and you would still likely be over estimating the remaining number of sets.

It is the prevailing attitude of there are so many proof sets out there they arent worth squat that is contributing to the value staying low.

I bet that if you pay close attention at the next show you go to, that you will not see as many proof sets over all as you did even just a couple years ago. We go to several shows a year, and I am starting to have diligently search to find specific years in decent shape and have actually been skunked the last two shows.

The silver proof sets. The simple fact of the silver content makes them a solid buy. Not to mention they are even prettier than the clad coins. Silver is beautiful in proof. Never a bad idea to get them.

solotime, to answer your question, the 2012 silver proof set is more valuable than the clad sets because of the silver content and many of us want our coins silver. And the 2012 Presidential dollars, included in all the sets, have the lowest mintage numbers in the series.

Then take away a WHOLE lot due to being broken up

At the October 2009 Denver Coin Expo, there were 117 dealer tables.

I counted over one thousand loose 2009 Proof Cent lenses for sale at the Expo.

So, at one event, under one (coliseum) roof, I had visual evidence that
over a thousand 2009 Proof Sets had been broken up as of October 2009.

I gave two 2009 Proof Sets as Christmas presents, with advice to keep the Sets intact.
IMHO, the 2009 Clad Set is vastly under-rated, just check what the '08 and '10 Clad Sets are going for,
and the '09 Set has the Copper Cents to boot!

So far, the 2012 Clad Sets' ebay auction prices have risen at a higher percentage rate than their Silver counterparts.
Many finish in the $60 range, almost double the $31.95 issue price. SsuperDdave's BIN link had six Sets sold at $65.

Most of the 2012 Silver Proof Set auctions I watch finish around $100, a nice premium over
their $67.95 issue price to be sure, but not a doubling of it.

Clad Proofs do have a larger collector base, and the price gain seems to reflect that.
The reason why a Silver Proof Set collector like me bought two of the 2012 Clad Proof Sets
(and recently traded an extra 2004 Silver Set for a 2008 Clad Set).

Hopefully, wulffy11 picked up the Set at his LCS.
Even the latest Greysheet value hasn't caught up yet with what they're fetching on auctions,
so if the LCS owner was going strictly by the Greysheet and didn't check ebay....

I picked one up yesterday for $75 as well at a coin show. Although I could probably make a few bucks, I think I want to keep it...it's pretty awesome!

Years ago I thought proof sets would be worth something some day and so ordered them from the mint annually for awhile. I believe I can now go to a coin shop and get a clad set from the past for lower than issue price counting in devaluation of the dollar.

Then they started making silver proof sets. Now it is possible to get something with actual intrinsic value so I do not mind getting them. I am just sorry I was not consistent and missed the 2010-2012 silver sets. Proofs did not hold my interest much until I just recently decided to start collecting proof Kennedy halves. Now it will cost me a lot more to get the 2012 S silver proof JFK b/c it is a new lowest mintage (excluding the 1998 Matte proof).

Do you know what was the first year they started making the silver proof sets?

Thanks.

I picked up the 2012 silver proof set by default. I couldn't find what I was looking for, so I bought one for $65.00 a few months back.

I attempted to purchase it on Saturday, but drove to the coin store only to realize they were closed for remodeling and a grand opening since they were moving down the block. I stopped in this morning for the grand opening ceremony and asked how much the 2012 Silver Proof Set would cost me and since it was still $71.95, I picked up one! I even made a buddy while I was waiting for the grand opening and had him sold on purchasing the 2012 Silver Proof Set since there was one more behind the counter. I showed him the set I bought and pulled out my phone and showed him several of the ebay listings for it. I had him sold, but when he went to get it, they suddenly put up a sign now selling it for $99.95 no more than ten minutes after I got it for $71.95. I was completely stunned. I was almost going to sell the guy the set I just purchased since it was my second set, but he was already long gone.

Good price, wulffy11. I'm glad for you. I'm still waiting for the 2009 mint sets I ordered at my LCS almost two weeks ago.

Thank you, blackjack. Which 2009 set? That was the first year I started buying proof sets, but I only have the clad 2009 Proof Set.
