I was looking at an
ebay auction and noticed this description for a 2004 Lucky Loonie dollar.
UP FOR BIDS........ A 2004 Canadian OLYMPIC LUCKY LOON $1 Coin..... Check the pics on this one, besides its Rare Story, its beauty is un-matched by any Coin in this group...this is just a gorgeous coin to collect.....Short story of its coming about..The Earlier Olympians believed that after seeing a Canadian "Loon" that their Luck had changed to the better...Thus born the Lucky Loon Coins of today..
This Coin has the modern Queen Mother on the face and the Olympic Emblem with the Loon on the reverse along with the Grand Maple Leaf....It is quite beautiful and just may bring you luck...... The sellers story though enthusiastic, is completely wrong. To start with, it is the Queen on the obverse and not the Queen Mother may she rest in peace. Secondly the story about earlier Olympians seeing a Canadian loon and believing that their luck had changed is pure fabrication. The real story is that during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City Utah, the man that was the head ice maker for the ice surfaces in the Hockey venues was a Canadian. It was typical for them to place a small coin like a dime to mark the centre of the rink so the various lines could be painted in the correct place. When nobody was around this Canadian buried a Canadian Loonie on top of the Canadian dime he had placed earlier as he thought it would bring luck to the Canadian Men and Womens hockey teams. It had been 50 years since Canada had won gold at the Olympics. In 2002 both the mens and womens teams won gold and the guy that buried the Loonie at centre ice dug it up and presented it to Wayne Gretzky who at the time was the Chairman of mens Olympic hockey. He kept the dime for himself. That Loonie was then donated to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto where it was put behind glass with a hole in front where you could stick your finger in and touch it. Eventually they had to remove the holed front and replace it with a solid piece because so many people were touching it that it was starting to wear down.
The
RCM decided to honor the spirit of that coin by issuing a "Lucky Loonie"
Here is a 2004 that I got in change today.
