This "Coin" was dug 12in deep VA Civil War campsite. Can not find any info online to match or identify it. Any info would be appreciated!

The crude reverse design along with a base metal planchet leads me to suspect that it is a spielmark, a contemporary gaming token/counter. Too bad the obverse has been lost to corrosion

It also could have been an attempt at a counterfeit $2.5 dollar gold piece...I have one.
These were generally dug at CSA campsites. Having been in the ground that long, would have removed the thin layer of gold.
My guess anyways :-)

Dig around here and all I come up with are spuds. I'd be elated to find something like that.

I agree w/ vermontensium... looks like it may be a counterfeit gold $2.50. I have seen many store/merchant tokens w/ a similar design, but none ever had the monetary denomination on them. The gilding / plating has obviously worn off due to being buried. Does it stick to a magnet?

My guess is that it's a contemporary counterfeit Quarter Eagle. Very common occurrence during the Civil War as money was short; however, rather uncommon to come across "in the wild" after so many years. :-)

Good find!

To be honest I'd love to have more of these in The Black Cabinet's stacks, but they're tough to come across on the Internet since ebay cracked down on counterfeits.

VADigger and all,

If you would like to check my post https://goccf.com/t/142545 I have an exact match to yours. It was not dug up but simply purchased as I mentioned in the post about a month ago - This is all in my post, however I tend to agree with BioKemist - I don't think its a forgery for the following theories - the obverse on mine is completely blank as well and clearly never had anything on it. Obviously a forgery would need 2 sides and in addition, the 2.50 at the bottom as opposed to the 2 1/2 D. on the real quarter eagles is a big discrepancy that IMHO I don't think a forger would overlook. If all 3 of these known coins/tokens (cek1313, VADigger and Vermont) have a blank obverse, erosion/corrosion over time seems pretty unlikely - forgery was definitely my first guess though. Have a look at my post and let me know what you think - just like you all I would love to nail this down! Btw I am very happy to have joined the forum - some great minds here :)
