A few years after the Carson City Mint closed, some unused dies were shipped back to Philadelphia. Some of them ended up having the mint marks partially filed off, and were restamped with the "O" mint mark for production in New Orleans. You can see various remnants of the original "C's" at differing points; there are a few different dies.

Back when, many dies were reused, you can also find O over S Morgans. The micro O Morgan is also thought to be a product of a Philadelphia die being used at New Orleans . Someone used whatever punch they had on hand to punch an O into the die.

Several years ago while there was some landscaping being done on the grounds of the old Carson City Mint some dies were unearthed. Additional digging was done around the building more dies were found. They were conserved and are now on display in their museum. Apparently they didn't destroy or return to Philadelphia all of their used dies, some were just taken outside and buried as a means of disposal. Who knows what could be found in the ground around any of the mints. Ed ANA LM-3175
