I just saw a disturbing video of a youtuber who sells on ebay complaining about the fact that paypal kept locking his account. He was sounding very suspicous as he talked about how he bought some 1 gram and 2.5 gram silver bars that are made to look like platinum! Here is the pic I took from his video.

Even though the seller says in the video he would list them as silver, the whole thing just reminds me why I refuse to ever buy bullion on ebay. I figured I would keep quiet in case someone else wanted to see his video and draw their own conclusions, instead of posting negative comments on the video. I think posting anything about scamming on the video would have probably tipped him off and he would have removed it from his channel. The real kicker is, I think my LCS is passing a 2.5gram bar of silver off as platinum as I type this. I suspect this because the bar was not in the assay card but had some cheap looking paper assay that could very easily be printed. I will investigate that upon my next visit and report back next week. I'm so glad platinum is noticably darker in color than silver. A longwinded post this time but I think this is disturbing and wanted to alert you all. Finally, I want the video up as long as possible so I don't want to expose it to too many people, but I will give the link to anyone who requests it via PM.

I've seen a lot of this lately on ebay. People selling clad no-name bars (advertised as clad) stamped as .999 fine silver. Faking platinum bars with a name brand is very disturbing, whether advertised honestly or not.

Not that you could weigh it on ebay but platinum is twice as dense as silver. 2.5 grams of silver would be twice the size of a 2.5 gram bar of platinum.

Physically the same size platinum bar would way more than twine the same size silver bar. Not that you could tell any of this until the bar was in your possession.

I have no problem with people saying clad, from my understanding clad means plated.

I don't care about clad or plated, or whatever terms are used in those cases either. This is straight silver being made to look like platinum.

Well, it's the same thing. Lesser metals being made to look like more valuable metals. When you stamp something as something that it is not, that is not ok.

Edited for mistyping.

@SDCrow, I'm not sure I completely follow you here, but I'm assuming that you agree with me about this particular case at least.

What does clad mean then? Of course I don't agree with this fake platinum.

I apologize. That's not at all what I meant to say. I know what clad means, and I didn't mean to make it sound like I was challenging you. I meant:

I wasn't referring to plating as the issue, the deceiving stamping is the issue.

I agree, this can't lead to anything good.

Here's an example of what I (so ineffectively) was trying to explain:

I agree, that's not cool, but it does clearly state clad. If I can read that correctly is says clad on the back of the bar. In the description it clearly states what it is.
On the other hand I beleive they're trying to prey on people who don't know much about metal collecting, it's a shame.

@SDCrow Yes, I see now. I hate ebay . . . let's legitimize what would otherwise be an obvious case of scamming. People never seem to mention the part where after the ebay sale is over and done with, there is all this fake bullion floating around in circulation and I doubt any transactions at that point include full disclosure that the bars are clad. They end up in B&M coin shops and everywhere else, in numbers higher than they otherwise would be if ebay wasn't such an easy vehicle to move it all. Did I mention that I hate ebay for bullion purchases? Anyway, let the buyer beware takes on a whole new meaning nowadays, when people have become accepting of these deceptive practices on ebay. "it said in the description it was clad, they should read that and not what's on the item being sold" and this wasn't directed at you rockdaddy, I didn't see your last response when I posted this, but I think we're all in agreement that these things are shady, whether or not they violate the letter of the ebay law so to speak *sigh*

Yeah, things aren't heading in the right direction. The fake Kook I wrote about a few weeks ago was from a seller with hundreds of sales and 100% positive feedback. Since I bought, he's had around 20 negatives, and that's just people who figured out they were fakes before they left feedback.

I had done a lot of small buys on ebay, but I think those days are close to over.

This guy sells Gold Flakes that may not contain any real gold. Fine print of course.

A total and outright scam, playing on words and in a very deceptive way. He should not only be banned by ebay but possibly investigated for potential criminal fraud of consumers.

My opinion only of course, but it's people selling drek like this that gives a bad name to our hobby. Ethically he is far over the edge.
