Hi All. I am a new member and had an idea for a project that I wanted to get a feel for. Since I dont know much about currency collection, I thought it would be best to ask here.

Question:
Is there any interest to track US Currency that was either bought of sold on ebay via the bills serial numbers?

What I mean is, would be it be beneficial to anyone to be able to access a website and type in the serial number of a bill you just bought or would like to buy to see if it was previously exchanged on ebay?

If there is a match, you would see the original images used in the auction, the description, price, etc.. (what you see in ebay now).

This is probably not something that may have immediate use, but if you look 5 years into the future, a lot of bills will have exchanged hands on ebay. I am not sure how many people here are store owners selling or buying paper currency, but perhaps it would be helpful to them to see if the bill they are about to buy from someone off the street was previously bought/sold on ebay and at what price.

Thank you all.

Have a great weekend. I really look forward to your feedback.

If my question is not clear, please let me know and ill try my best to fix that.

I have seen some people keeping track of such things. They include not only ebay but other higher-value auctions like Heritage. From my limited memory they will specialize just the subsets they are interested in (national bank notes, $500 bills), not all paper money. I wouldn't be surprised if others are keeping track of more current bills.

These are referred to as 'census'es and access is not free.

thank you. I was not aware of Heritage auctions but their site shows 96K completed auctions since 2000 - great collection of data.

I also didn't know about the censuses so thats a great avenue for me as well.

It would be great for obsoletes. A lot of the information on some notes comes from trying to recreate complete sheets by using the serial numbers and matching edges. For example, with Western and Atlantic railroad notes, researchers were able to determine specific sheet locations for individual notes after a sheet was recreated by using the serial numbers. The type of printing and the serial numbers were able to be used to get that info. I've also seen that information used to demonstrate grade inflation in slabbed notes when they first started stabbing notes.
