As I noted in my recent re-introduction post, my five-year-old daughter took up a new interest in coin collecting which really drove me to get back into the hobby. We're working together on a US Type Set and having a ball! Here's what we've collected thus far. Most older coins were ones I had in my personal collection from when I was a kid, gifts from relatives that are long gone. The rest are either from ebay, circulation, our local coin shop, or recent gifts: Large Cents: 1851 Braided Hair Small Cents: 1899 Indian Head Bronze Oak Wreath 1943 Steel 1958 Bronze Wheat 1968 Bronze Memorial 2008 Copper-Zinc Memorial 2009 Bicentennial 2012 Union Shield 2 Cent: 1864 Bronze 3 Cent: 1853 Silver 1865 Nickel Nickels: 1883 No Cents 1906 With Cents 1936 Buffalo Variety II 1943 War/Silver 2000 Jefferson Memorial 2004 Westward Journey 2007 Facing Forward Dimes: 1916 Barber 1941 Mercury 1954 Roosevelt Silver 2012 Roosevelt Clad Quarters: 1964 Washington Silver 1974 Washington Clad 1976 Bicentennial 2004 Statehood (Iowa, of course, since we live there) 2009 Territories 2010 ATBHalf Dollars: 1944 Liberty Walking 1952 Franklin 1964 Kennedy 90% 1968 Kennedy 40% 1976 Kennedy Bicentennial 1979 Kennedy Clad Large Dollars: 1889 Morgan 1923 Peace 1972 Eisenhower 1976 Eisenhower Bicentennial Small Dollars: 1979 SBA2000 Sacagawea 2007 Presidential Eventually, once I get 50 posts , I'll put up our want list in the appropriate forum. Our next items in the hunt are Barber & Walking Liberty Quarters, Liberty Seated dime, Half Dimes, Shield nickel, Coronet Large Cent, and Coronet Half Cent. Loving the hobby again, especially the quality time it's giving me with my daughter! Edited by cheezyfryes 01/27/2013 3:09 pm

again Nice start to your type set! You'll be at 50 posts in no time. It's great when family members can enjoy this hobby together, especially when its a parent/child combination. Happy hunting together! Ed ANA LM-3175

Oh my gosh! HOW WONDERFUL! 5 years old is a bit young, but how gratifying. "Show and Tell" in the years ahead. Father and daughter sharing a laugh and a "wow." It doesn't get any better than this cheezyfryes. CHERISH IT!!!!!!!!

Give her a few coins with designs that she likes. At that age coins that are very obviously different are what catch their attention. That is how I started out, 60 years ago. I didn't become an active collector until my late teens.

This is cool. Tried to do the same with my 10 yr old. She could not care less. If they made coins with American Girl Dolls on them she may be interested.

smokeriderdon nailed it! Your daughter is as much fascinated by your attention as she is with the coins. Dare I say, MILK IT for all it is worth! AND it is worth untold value. Not the coins, but the time shared.
Again I say, "CHERISH IT!"

Cheezy, For your typeset, you'll also want the 2005 half of Westward Journey represented; this featured a one-year different obverse, and the reverse is either the buffalo or the picture of pine trees that says "Ocean in view! O! The joy!" I work as a cashier and if you're having trouble finding one of these in a nice condition (you shouldn't, but who knows--lots of folks here have trouble finding ATB while I drown in 'em), I'd be happy to pull one for you and your daughter as a gift.

I have a three-year-old girl and a three-month old girl, and I hope like heck at least one of them catches the bug so I have a loved one to share this hobby with. I'm glad to hear your little girl has taken an interest.

Thanks for all the encouragement, everyone! It's really great to have my daughter sharing in the fun. Her most prized coin right now is an old Jefferson nickel she got from my dad, covered with black muck. He told her it was a special "gum nickel" and they joked & laughed about it. We put it in a coin flip and labeled it "Gum Nickel" with the date she got it from her grandpa. It might never be worth more than 5 cents to the market, but I have a feeling that's going to be a pretty special memory keepsake when she's older.
