Unexpected trade brought this one in to my possession. What would you grade her?

Looks like EF-40 or so for detail. I'm bothered by the flatness of Liberty's legs. That area seems to show the wear of a coin in VG grade and really looks out of place. The denticles are poorly struck and/or merging with the rim in some areas which again seems inconsistent with the overall amount of detail. I also wonder about that coppery spot on the reverse: some kind of struck-through material, alloy inclusion (i.e., "copper spot"), or maybe a corrosion spot? Half Dimes in general can show odd strike patterns and uneven rims so maybe your coin was just made that way.

@ Joabler, just looked at it under a loupe, the rim is weakly struck on the reverse around united. However my pictures on this leave something to be desired. I also looked at the copper spot on the reverse and does not appear to be corrosion....at least under a 10x.

Well whatever that copper spot was on the reverse it came off with a touch of acetone

New photos then! without spot. It does look weakly struck. I'd agree @ EF40 minimum. It's such a great looking design when not full of letters or stars! This and the 1837 Dime w/o stars both remind of Gobrecht dollar pattern coins, one of my favorite US coin designs when Liberty is not cluttered up in the design, very asthetic looking.

shadowtrooper78, This link may be of interest to you: http://seateddimes.yuku.com/topic/2....UQbD8HfjFLQYours is a so-called "large" date and mine is a "small" date. The link above gives mrhalfdime's (aka Steve's) explanation of how to tell the difference: flat top one is small, hook top one is large. As for condition, I am not uncomfortable with XF. Your picture, highlighted below, is my reasoning: Mine is marked XF-45 but I can live with XF-40. Her shoulder clasp and the pole from her hand to the leg are two areas that I examine. Edit: Done with a scanner and not a fancy camera.

Thanks matthewvincent that was an informative read on a type that I'm not all that familiar with....just like the looks. I traded 3 fairly common AU morgans for this guy....best date was a 90-S. I feel pretty good about it. @ DS I remember you posting that before....I think....beautiful obverse.

shadowtrooper78 that was a good deal IMO these are quite hard to find in nice shape in any grade, while Morgans are for the most part a dime a dozen (well maybe a little more than that with silver prices up lately).
