Well I posted about this 1861 silver 3 cent way back when I first joined the forum, but was asking advise on what a good price to pay for it was, but had no photos. Well, these are VERY hard to photo due to the size and my olympus didnt cut it, but my mom just bought a nice cannon and let me borrow it to photo some coins...
I bought it raw and talked the guy down to $50.. good deal? I'd guess its mid AU...

*disclaimer* lol, The images are still a bit blury due to the size, and me getting used to the camera... its pretty toned. No environmental damage damage, no bends and all the details are there on the reverse, in the photos it looks like the shapes in the two tips of the C are worn, but their not, the diamond in the middle, all the circles and the end shapes are all perfect.. Sorry for my horrible pics...
thanks everyone!!

I have a 1861 trime and the reverse is rotated 180 degrees. Are the dies on your coin rotated?

It doesn't quite look AU but it might be due to the pics. Either way, this coin is really nice and it's from the civil war era which adds to it's collectibility. You paid $50, really? I paid $55 for my coin in 1998 and your coin looks nicer than mine. You could probably resell it today and make $. Good purchase!

I am at XF 45 but could see it being AU 50. I see wear on the tips of the star (there is some blending of the border line) and the arrow ribbon on the reverse.

Ya, $50 over the summer, around June/July, the guy I bought it from was asking over $100... I guess I'm a good haggler.. Lol.
No, unfortionitly mine does not have a rotated die.. I wish it did!!
I can see in the pics it may look EF-45, that's why I threw up a disclaimer. Due to my bad photos.. But in hand under a loupe I think it has a good chance at AU... But then again by no means am I an expert. But for $50.. Can't go wrong with that! Numismedia has the EF-40 at $102.. So not bad at all.. (This was my first coin purchase after inheriting the family coins.. I was actually worried $50 was too much.. Like I said he was asking over $100 and I threw out $50 as a feeler number expecting him to come down a bit.. And he emailed me back the next day accepting 50... I went and met him instantly!
I don't get it... I could zoom in on my (I believe) VAM-8 Morgan that was posted right after this extremely close.. But this one I must have taken 30 photos and none really "showed" the coin as well as I wanted to.. O well, at least I'm getting a bit better at photographing..
Thanks everyone! Your the best!

Great find, great deal! I don't have any of these and may need to get one just because, well, I want one of everything

These trimes strike me as really unusual in terms of design. They're so different from any other US coin (well, except the Shield nickel). First time I saw the reverse I thought it was Soviet or something.

Want!

I think AU50, very nice, I sold one last year for $55.00 so you did good on the price IMO.
